Claremont (bradford) becomes a car park

Lucy | 07.11.2005 17:55 | Free Spaces | Social Struggles

In the space a businessman or student parks their car, their could be a fire where people sit round and relax.. the space for 3 cars could be used for a caravan, someones home. Soon, the site where people lived for over a decade will be robbed of its trees, bulldozed and covered in tarmac and orderly white lines, all in the name of regeneration...

For background information on Claremont click here

Claremont was supposed to have been cleared on the 23rd of October so the landlord could walk on and put a new lock on the gate. Then the site that has been a home for over a decade should have waited in silence for the bulldozers to come and turn it into.. a carpark.

Bradford Regeneration? Thats more important than people having homes, surely? Idiots

But there was a bearded young man with a puppy and a caravan and a soundsystem who did not move on, and when the landlord came he left soon after, not a happy man.

Unfortunally, now a bailiffs warrent has been applied for, and claremonts days are numbered. 17th of November they will come, and unfortunately although we have tried to get help to resist the eviction even if its only for a few days, there aren't enough of us.

We are going to have a fire and a BBQ on Saturday (12th) night, all are welcome, bring food, firewood, CDs and friends. It would also be a good opportunity to make plans to hinder work to be done to transform the site...
Hopefully see you there

Chilli, fire and sounds this wednesday...

08.11.2005 14:08

We're also planning a big meal, some sounds and a fire on site this wednesday from about 8pm- so if you can't wait till saturday, or you just can't get enough of getting muddy...come along, we could also really do with the following:

awnings/marquees/big tents,
inverters,
more music- rigs, instruments, dj's etc
folk who do things with fire, poi etc
people who can cook
harnessess and more folk who can climb trees
generators, firewood, dogs and you!

see ya there, or if you can't come to wednesday or saturday but want to help please get in touch we plan to keep putting stuff on right up to the eviction,(and with enough folk, after it!)

Its a shame that the people who fought the campaign intially and moved off when the eviction date came, are now getting a

bad name caused by those so-called protesters that are insisting on continuing to occupy Claremont. Don't get me wrong, I

realise what you are doing is to try make a point...but i believe that point has been made.

Everyone fought for Claremont site through the courts and with dignity but in the end admitted defeat as change is always going to occur (and sometimes for the better!) I, myself was gutted when they lost the case as i remember going to site 12 years ago to party and see my mates, but progression cannot be stopped, only delayed. All those that moved off are glad they did, and just wish the plight of Claremont could be laid to rest....but good luck anyway.

I've only been to claremont once and it was a while ago so I don't really know the full story but from reading this somesomething seems strange:
Lix -
"Everyone fought for Claremont site through the courts and with dignity but in the end admitted defeat as change is always going to occur (and sometimes for the better!) "
and "progression cannot be stopped, only delayed"

I don't understand why someone with such a defeatest attitude is complaining about someone who doesn't. Surely there's no point in doing anything if you think change and so called progression cannot be stopped.
And why get involved in indymedia if you think this change can be better - surely thats calling for THEIR change and ultimately the destruction of alternative lifestyles and alternative media (such as indymedia!).
Weird
