Now is the time to stop the BNP - 16 Jan

Leeds Unite | 11.01.2006 13:29 | Anti-racism

Now is the time to stop the BNP -
Organised by Yorkshire and Humberside TUC and UAF.

Join the protest outside the court for the opening of the trial of Fascist BNP leaders Nick Griffin and Mark Collett. Assemble Monday 16th January - 9am outside Leeds Crown Court, Oxford Row. Rally at noon outside Leeds Art Gallery, The Headrow, Leeds

The BNP continue to try and divide our communities with their hatred and lies. They peddle lies about asylum seekers and immigrants and different ethnic groups. In particular, they wish to cynically use the tragedy in London this year to whip up racism against Muslims. All sections in our society must unite against them whatever your religion, race, gender, sexual preference or age.

In November, Yorkshire and Humberside TUC and Unite against Fascism organised a highly successful protest and rally outside the preliminary hearing of BNP leader Nick Griffin and Mark Collett’s trial for incitement to racial hatred. During the day 1000 people showed their opposition to the BNP.

On 16 January 2006 the trial of these leading BNP members begins. We want to show more than ever, in the lead up to the council election period, that people across the North totally reject racism and fascism. Join us at 9am outside the Crown Court in Leeds and at noon outside the Art Gallery.

Bring banners from your area, union or group to show the breadth of opposition to the Nazi BNP.

Click www.leedsunite.org.uk for the leaflet for protest.

Talk about not seeing the wood for the trees!

You people's preoccupation with the BNP is laughable. You might as well start picking on the Monster Raving Loony Party - they're about as relevant.

Whatever you do though, don't bother about the real danger facing this country - the genuine extremists, not the bunch of no-hope numbskulls in the BNP. The kind of extremist that blows themselves up on tube trains. The kind of extremist that advocates Sharia law in this country.

I bet this comment won't appear.

Anti-BNP but even more Anti-Islamofascist

Methinks thou dost protest too much!

Now who would want to post a comment having a pop at Muslims and trying to stop even more people joining what already looks like a massive anti-BNP rally?

Are you getting worried Mr Griffin?

Well...

...No-one would deny that there is a tiny minority of fascists that are also practicing Muslims. These few however are hardly in a position to, nor are they really attempting to create a mass movement and party structure capable of exerting their will on British society.

Although fascists of every colour, race or religion must be argued down and hindered in their efforts to organise, we must prioritise fighting those that pose a genuine threat of success in the immediate to medium future first.

Read some history books.

Cheerleading for the State

It's very disappointing that parts of the 'Left' wish to identify with State sponsored show trials. May I suggest that you dress as sheep for your next demo? If not then, perhaps, Lemmings? Clearly you want to set precedents where entrapment and curtailment of freedom of expression are acceptable. Just don't act shocked when such precedents are turned on you by the State. There are ample examples of just this in our recent past after all....

The call for a united anti-BNP response simply masks real divisions in values and vision. Islam is certainly not a monolith but many of its adherents express deeply reactionary views. The latest condemnation of civil partnerships fits a pattern. If opposition to the BNP is the only thing on which we can unite then there is a lot of work to do.

We should accept the right of others to criticise our religious views (even in a way which could be regarded as offensive). What is the alternative? Are we all to tiptoe round one another or pretend that we agree on everything? What a boring, sanatised society we would be! If the price for a pluralist, inclusive and democratic society is having to put up with countering arguments from the BNP then so be it.
