Glastonbury movie uses counterculture archive.

undercurrents | 29.03.2006 16:16 | Culture | London

A unique archive has been used to make the most anticipated movie of 2006. On April 14 film director Julien Temple will launch "GLASTONBURY" the movie in cinemas across the UK. Swansea based video production company, Undercurrents has supplied both unique images and research facilities for the movie.

Musicians featured include, The Velvet Underground, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Primal Scream, Alabama 3, Billy Bragg, The Scissor Sisters, Radiohead, The Levellers, and David Bowie amongst others. When the festival takes a break in 2006, there will be no better way to enjoy this unique musical experience.

The director used video images from the undercurrents archive of defining moments in British counterculture history.

Archive manager of undercurrents Paul O’Connor said today-
‘It’s very exciting to know that hundreds of thousands of cinema goers will be enjoying the Glastonbury movie as well as viewing our images on the big screen. Our archive is unique in that it tells a radical history of the last decade, so we are not surprised that the Glastonbury moviemakers came to Swansea to look at our archive. We can’t wait to see the movie.’

Glastonbury the movie will be released at 4 charity screenings in London, Bristol, Leeds and Glasgow during April before going on General release.

that's very nice.

but is it news?

I mean really, so you sold / gave some footage / pics of "defining moments in British counterculture history" what ever that is, to a glasto film. I mean whoooooooooo-hooooooooooo!!

don't get me wrong, respect to the political activism films and all, genoa and more in depth films etc fair play.

but do we really need this kind of PR press release spam? you could have written a bit more, or at least something more interesting about the film to put on IndyMedia surely? Could you?

ah, well, better get on with promoting the launch of the "most anticipated movie of 2006", which is sponsored by those lovely media friendly types SONY and don't forget glasto sponsor extraordinaire, ORANGE - yip yip!

it's for charity so ok.

I thought undercurrents was still in Oxford...must be behind the times or something.

Undercurrents co-opted by the corporate take-over of Glastonbury?!

Strange one this, alternative media group, undercurrents, gets involved with a film about a festival that has been taken over by the likes of Vince Power's Mean Fiddler Corp and is now sponsored by the likes of Orange.

Whateva next!

I wonder if the film covers this? I bet it doesn't!

To change the world you have to talk to the world, not just a tiny minority of it, and sadly the “mainstream” is the loudest voice out there by a long way… so to talk to the world it might be helpful to talk to the mainstream? If you can do it on your terms – undercurrents is one of the alt-groups that has a very good history of doing this.

Just getting out the message that the is another way to live is powerful in its self, that to do this you have to embed your world view as a snippet in a mainstream product - this for me is better than not to put it out at all.
