After a few stuttering weeks, the Common Place Cinema is back to its regular 'every other Sunday' afternoon slot starting this Sunday, 14 May from 3pm.
This week marks the 12th anniversary of Mandela's election as the first black African president of South Africa on 10 May, 1994. Alas, the ANC has since abandoned its radical class politics and become one of the leading neoliberal governments in the world. But we thought we'd make this Sunday an African one by showing two important films about life in parts of the continent.

'Moolaade' (2004) dir: Ousmane Sembene
Sembene's latest film tackles the subject of female circumcision. Semebene has long seen cinema as a socially-engaged, educational tool, calling it 'Africa's night school'. This film was shown in villages across the continent and followed by open discussions about female circumcision.

'Tilai' (1990) dir: Idrissa Ouedragao
In an Burkino village of no specified time a man and woman's love affair causes problems for the community. Slow paced,
realist-influenced story from one of Africa's leading filmmakers.
