CLIMATE INJUSTICE IN THE NIGER DELTA: 10 YEARS ON FROM KEN SARO-WIWA

Bongo | 22.06.2006 10:18 | Ecology | Social Struggles

SUNDAY 2ND JULY @ THE COMMON PLACE

Ten years after the judicial murder of human rights activist Ken Saro-Wiwa shocked the world, the communities of the Niger Delta in Nigeria continue to bear the burden of our demand for oil with escalating violence and environmental deterioration.

Now the climate change provoked by oil threatens to submerge the delta for ever. Remember Saro-Wiwa Coalition presents an afternoon of readings, poetry and film inspired by the Niger Delta struggle.

REFINING MEMORY - 30 MIN FILM
Short film made by Judy Price and Andrew Conio in 2005 as part of the Remember Saro-Wiwa project exploring issues around oil exlpoitation in the Niger Delta and the death of Ken Saro-Wiwa.

Among the speakers will be:

JACK MAPANJE - Internationally renowned poet formerly imprisoned without charge and exiled from Malawi. Jack will read from his numerous, humorous & harrowing collection of poetry.

KEN WIWA - journalist, author and director of the Ken Saro-Wiwa Foundation. Ken’s letters to his father are featured in 'A Month and A Day & Letters' (Ayebia Publishing).

JAMES MARRIOTT - co-author of 'The Next Gulf: London, Washington and Oil Conflict in Nigeria'. and co-director of award winning social and environmental justice group PLATFORM.

KADIJA SESAY - co-editor of 'Dance the Guns to Silence'; Gen. Sec. of African Writers Abroad (PEN) Centre.

Feedback on Ken Saro Wiwa event

06.07.2006 08:58

Although Ken was unable to make this event due to commitments in Nigeria the passionate, humorous, informative and entertaining talks and readings from Jack Mapanje, Kadija Sesay & James Marriott made up for his absence.

There was unfortunately little time afterwards to have a proper debate/ discussion of some of the issues raised but it is hoped that a larger event will be organised in the future as there was certainly a lot of enthusiasm and good contacts generated.
