Stop the War's People's Assembly: Islamophobia and the war on terror

Drop the word 'Islamophobia' - it is racist itself. Use ' Anti-Islam', 'anti-Muslim', instead.

Antagonism, hostility to, violence to, scapegoating of ......... etc should or may or could precede the word Islam or Muslim, to replace the very racist and very anti-Islam word Islamophobia. Phobia or fear in itself implies that the fault lies with Islam itself or with Muslims themselves.

Think …..And drop the word Islamophobia and all that that word carries with it in the British and Western contexts.

Note the way the London TV news outlets BBC and ITV carried the news [ Friday 3 November 2006] of the latest Israeli shooting of innocent Muslim/Palestinian women… Contrast that with the same outlets coverage over the past week of the alleged gas-leak deaths of two holidaying children in Greece..

Notice how the humanity of Arabs, Palestinians and Muslims are not accepted anywhere near the levels of those who are presented as being the selected and the chosen superior humanity category.

Notice this morning [Saturday 4 November 2006] Times [Murdoch] newspaper and others. See how many headings are based on antagonism towards Islam and Muslims.

Read the item on the alleged nuclear ambitions] notice the use of the word ambition after nuclear in this context]…

Count the number of posts against Islam and Muslims actually bearing the name Peter Tatchell have been allowed to run on UK Indymedia. And look for any replies to those venomous, hostile posts. They are not Islamophobia. They are anti-Muslim, anti-Islamic.

I too think Islamophobia is a crap word but I don't believe it is racist. After all people who take a sceptical view of the supposed merits of the European Union are frequently referred to as Europhobic but there is no explicit implication to Europeans by the use of this term. (Yes some people classed as such may indeed dislike the French or the Germans or whatever, but many Europhobics have honourable concerns about democratic sovereignty). My view is that Islamophobia is just too long a word for most people to be comfortable about using it - six syllables. I would prefer Anti Muslim because it’s shorter and can be understood by kids.
