Demonstration against Clan Ebor today

Leeds No Borders | 07.09.2007 17:05 | Migration

Today around 120 members of the Internationl Iranian Refugee Organisation and Leeds No Borders gathered outside Waterside reporting centre on Kirkstall Road to raise awareness of and demonstrate against the Home Office's latest disgusing attempt to deport vulnerable people to unsafe countries: Clan Ebor

Clan Ebor is a pilot scheme, a similar version of which has already happened in Glasgow. It targets 60 families in the Leeds area. They are invited to a 'case conference' where the whole family, children included, are reminded of exactly why they have no right, according to the Home Office, to be in the UK. They are given 30 days to prove otherwise then subjected to a further case conference, after which the Home Office will attempt to deport them.

This is the latest in a long line of Home Office schemes to further abuse asylum seekers, as if the regular dawn raids, 100s in detention and constant forced deportations aren't enough.

Some of the Iranian families affected by Clan Ebor were present at the demo today, supported by dozens of their friends. It was very successful with great media coverage. A long line of people held messages such as 'stop deportations' and 'No to Clan Ebor, yes to freedom of movement for all.' and gained the support of passers by.

Families of numerous nationalities are affected and are urged to work together against the scheme. There is a growing campaign against Clan Ebor in the Leeds area. For more information contact Leeds No Borders at  leedsnoborders@riseup.net

If you or someone you know has received a letter/form about Clan Ebor please contact either Leeds No Borders or the Refugee Council, who can help you to fill the form in.
