UK Meat factory goes up in flames

ALF UK | 02.04.2008 13:30 | Animal Liberation | World

Reports are coming in of a blaze at a meat factory in

Media sources are reporting of a major fire at a meat processing plant in Aberdeenshire, it's apparently too early to say whether or not the blaze was started deliberately however at least this = one less animal slaughter centre.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"About 80 firefighters have been tackling a major blaze at a meat plant in Aberdeenshire.

Fire crews were called to the Kepak Buchan plant in Turriff at about 0440 BST on Wednesday morning.

Grampian Fire and Rescue Service sent eight pumps, but the blaze was so large an extra four were sent.

A large plume of smoke could be seen for several miles. Fifteen staff were evacuated, and residents were advised to keep windows closed.

No-one was injured the building at Markethill Industrial Estate.

Grampian Police said there was also a "minor ammonia leak" which was not a cause for immediate concern.

A spokesman said it was too early to say if there were any suspicious circumstances, and an investigation had been launched.

He added: "The fire is now under control. Roads are expected to remain closed until the fire brigade has stood down."

There was livestock, including cattle and lambs, on the premises, but they were not said to be at risk from the fire. "

can you imagine if it had been full?

Aberdeen would have smelled like bbq for weeks!

Mmmm... This story has made me hungry.

Fact is it wasn't full, and no non human animals lost their lives.

If this story has made you hungry I hope you enjoy your saturated fat bbq and inevitable heart attacks later in life.

Hopefully a few more meat factories might accidentally catch fire under mysterious circumstances, hitting profits and production.

2nd abattoir burnt in the last 5 months - UK

02.04.2008 23:30

Last one was in Surrey, for some reason abattoirs have a problem with catching on fire....seems to happen quite often....I wonder why. Direct action needs no words?

Who?

03.04.2008 06:59

If I was fire investigation branch I'd be looking at the owners of these abbatoirs. My money is on the abbatoir was losing money so set fire to it to claim on insurance. This has happened time and time again. Some of these scum set fire to their businesses and then even claim it as ALF on Bite Back so they can claim on insurance.

Don't let the scum get away with it. The insurance people should be VERY suspicious about this. They should check the accounts, failing businesses often do this.

Lets face it if they are happy to slaughter defenceless animals they wouldn't think twice about burning down their abbatoir and lieing to insurance for money about it.

ye gods, you ultraveggie AR types really are intolerant/fanatical to the point of fascism, aren't you?
Let me explain something called 'reality' to you, peter, as you seem to have problems with the concept:
1. there are some 8 billion people on a place near you called 'planet earth' (a concept also seemingly beyond your ken).
2. A clear majority of them are carnivores, and presumably quite happy with that state of things
3. You will probably never change this
4. You will CERTAINLY not change this by demonisng them in this screechy, intolerant fashion, in fact you will simply queer the pitch of those of your saner brethren who can and do try to persuade reasonably.
5. There is something called 'the food chain'; it is why lions kill wildebeest etc, and we are at its' peak. We have eaten meat since the dawn of humankind as a result.
6. It is NOT a case of 'you right, us wrong'; life - for adults anyway - is rather more complicated.
7. There is an entirely reasonable case to be made for far more ethical treatment of our comrades from the animal kingdom and much tighter abattoir regulation.
8. your absolutism prevents that case from being heard.

I've always thought the ultra-AR type to be the lunatic fringe of indymedia; the post I quoted confirms it

insurance, bad practice?,meanwhile this wk thousands of cars burnt in uk&Basra

03.04.2008 15:26

insurance or "accident" most likely cause of these abbatoir fires as well,my family are butchers & I know the meat industry is notorious for inadequate health & safety, disease & waste. Check numerous industrial disputes including that at Pork farms nottingham & its poor health & safety record, plus that of Bernard Mathews is notorious & corrupt.
Government should shut down most abbatoirs straight away on health & safety, disease & global population resource grounds.

It is unlikely the fire was set off by arsonists, firemen are thorough in these cases unlike with thousands of cars+allotment buildings deliberately burnt out in uk.
Many of these arsonists may change, but many do not & then go onto join the british army & dishonour the conduct of true warriors&peacekeepers by slaughtering & terrorising innocent civilians as is now happening with Basra, Iraq etc.

Any support of arson by "activists" is dodgy at the least, sets health & safety+ industrial relations back & is usually advocated-promoted by provocatuers or a minority of bitter people who would do better encouraging more businesses especially cooperative ones to go vegan.
These recent reports on IMC of fires & mink releases really do seem like a PR operation, especially as Mink releases & arson as a tactic have been regularly dismissed & are known as damaging & dumb by 99% of the animal rights movement.

Meatmen risking 5-15yrs to make a bit more money?

03.04.2008 20:24

I find this hilarious....an individual (the same yet again!) that is claiming that all ALF fires are now just animal abusers claiming on insurance? Makes me laugh. No doubt a small few are, but these would be not claimed through the ALF (the largest so-called "terror" organisation in the world)....because they know the consequences. Wise up! Fires breaking out during the day - are slaughtermen doing their job shit / insurance scams - see the latest $40 million arson in the US a couple of weeks ago (23rd March).

This are obviously completely unlike "BLAZING" fires breaking out between 12am-4am. Don't you think they might have "blazed" earlier on if there would of been a hazard, or example like when they locked up to go home? Think "the use of an accelerate"; i.e. gasoline.

Clearly the ALF are more and more turning to ELFers, in the sense that claiming a fire only increases the investigation into you/your cell, and without a communique, the police have no motivate to fund the investigation. If its about economic damage, then why should activists need to report that they have severely damaged the meat industry? The point is they don't, because industries will recognise that they keep going up in flames more often than any other businesses.

P.S - You need to talk to more butchers who have been routinely targeted "the premiums just keep on going up, it's costing a fortune and it's putting us out of business".

Vivia ALF.

Yeh right!

Fire does not always = insurance job

04.04.2008 14:39

Those who hammer on that fire automatically = insurance job should read Keith Manns "From dusk til dawn" there's been many instances in the past where activists have used fire or other destructive methods.

Sure it can be dangerous if undertaken in a stupid manner, but when used in the correct situations it's devastatingly effective. Not only does it put the target out of business until rebuilding work is completed (sometimes many months or years) it also inflicts serious economic damage to profits, if an insurance company finds out its client is under attack it will classify them as high risk and either drop them or hike the rates up massively. Some insurance companies also utilise small print and legal loopholes so if a client is attacked with fire they will not pay out, resulting in the client loosing potentially hundreds of thousands of pounds.

"1. there are some 8 billion people on a place near you called 'planet earth' (a concept also seemingly beyond your ken). "

Right. So given there are so many humans on the planet it has never been more icrucial that we live in a sustainable manner, which means eating low on the food chain.

"2. A clear majority of them are carnivores, and presumably quite happy with that state of things "

Do you have a reference for this? Have you done a survey? According to the producers of "Earth from above", two thirds of the human population is vegetarian, and most humans for most of their existsnce have probably eaten little or no meat. Certainly the very fact that eating meat makes us so sick would tend to support the view that humans are designed for a vegetarian diet.

"3. You will probably never change this "

Numbers of vegetarians are growing in the western world. I have personally been involved in changing a number of hard core carnivores into vegatarians.

"4. You will CERTAINLY not change this by demonisng them in this screechy, intolerant fashion, in fact you will simply queer the pitch of those of your saner brethren who can and do try to persuade reasonably. "

It was actually the first poster being deliberately provocative. The tone of your own posting is also intolerant, patronising, sarcastic and ignorant.

"5. There is something called 'the food chain'; "

There is something called torture, rape, death, disease, racism, intolerance, sadism etc. Just because something exists does not make it right.

"it is why lions kill wildebeest etc, and we are at its' peak."

Lions are carnivores and are adapted to a meat diet. In fact they cannot survive on anything else. Humans get sick on a meat diet. There is no comparison.

We have eaten meat since the dawn of humankind as a result.

Do you have any evidence for this? The physiological and antrhopological evidence would tend to suggest firstly that meat eating was a recent phenomenon, caused by food shortages in the ise cage, and secondly that humans are healthier if they do not eat meat, implying they are not designed to eat it and presumably (if you believe in evolution) that they evolved without it for much of their history.

Guess what. We are no longer living in the Ice age where we are suffering food shortage due to lack of meat. Quite the contrary. It is feeding good grain that could go directly to starving humans into meat animals that is a major cause of world hunger.

6. It is NOT a case of 'you right, us wrong'; life - for adults anyway - is rather more complicated.

So tells us O great one, what the complications are. You are good at making bald statements but not so good at substantiating them or providing evidence.

7. There is an entirely reasonable case to be made for far more ethical treatment of our comrades from the animal kingdom and much tighter abattoir regulation.

There is an even better case for having no abattoirs at all. For one thing, it is impossible to kill animals at the line speeds demanded by flesh addicted westerners without doing so inhumanely. Read Eisnitz "Slaughterhouse" for a horrifying expose on slaughterhouse practice, or have a look at the film "Earthlings".

8. your absolutism prevents that case from being heard.

Actually the best improvements in animal welfare have come from those who believe in animal rights. This is certainly true in New Zealand where I have been involved in the political process.
