Today people in Leeds gathered outside the city centre art gallery to unite against fascism. Less than an hour after the demo left the area it was filled with Orangemen and other Loyalists henchmen.
The opposition was nowhere to be seen. We weren't organised and we weren't canny. This left comrades undefended while the Orange order celebrated taking back the streets after 40 years without their sectarian hate marches.
Racism and fascism come in many guises - and now the BNP have been ushered into high places it seems their old friends are welcome too.

Family: Right – family first, everyone else can go swivel. Left – forget the family, it’s the masses that count.
Workers’ Rights: Right – you attack trade unions and exploit your own workers. Left – you support trade unions and exploit your own workers.
Transport: Right – happy to give lifts in your flash car but begrudge spending taxes on public transport. Left – you support public transport, drive a car, but won’t give anyone a lift.
Arts: Right – being cultured, you encourage anyone to excel but resent public spending on arts. Left – you will book chums and established artists for events, but screw that bourgeois individualistic asshole in my branch who sacrificed their artistic career for the cause.
Comedy: Right – you believe in public decorum but will happily tell outrageous and offensive jokes in private. Left – you support freedom of speech but come crashing down on anyone who even breathes heavily at a shibboleth... unless expediency dictates otherwise.
Truth: Right – you hate the traitor who signed that confidentiality clause and now has a best-selling book all about you and your little foibles, but you love insider-trading. Left – you love the whistle-blower, unless the organization they’re blowing is your own.
Sexism: Right – sexism? What’s wrong with being sexy? Left – you condemn sexism in all forms but snicker over ‘horizontal recruitment’. And get the little lady to make a cup of tea while you’re at it. Earl Grey. With a slice of lemon... comrade.
If you’re on the Left and none of this describes your own behaviour, well done. You win a red star. Shame I never met you.
yep and aren't the labour and tory parties just the acceptible face of corporate fascism? Funny thing is we could consider this island as being the centre of corporate capitalism ( with no real manufacturing base and 85% gdp being the 'service ()sic )' industry - raises some awkward questions and with a resists influx of international racists, ubercapitalsists and fascists too. Am i right in thinking that this media, is against remembering the dead from both world wars? Against remembering King William of Orange's great victory at the battle of the boyne that brought about the freedom of the United Kingdom, which give everyone civil and religious liberties? It seems the people in the centre of Leeds didnt notice the taking over of the streets as they sang and clapped and shouted in support of the marchers.
Some words the marchers know are freedom and democracy, truth and responsibility, honesty and pride.
They are not racists nor sectarian in the proper understanding of the word, but stand for liberty of religion as well as civil liberty.

Sean Russell Beheaded by Jewish Students
Sinn Feins MEP (Since kicked out by the voters in the recent 2009 euro elections) Mary Lou McDonald spoke at the rally to commemorate Russell in the north Dublin park.
