Vote for renovation not demolition - Save the Welsh Streets

no demolitions | 22.04.2006 17:36 | Social Struggles | Liverpool

A letter from the Welsh Street Homes Group

Hi ,

I am contacting you to let you know there will be an anti-demolition candidate in every ward of the city for the forthcoming local elections on May 4th. (unless you live in St Michaels where all 3 councillors already support us, one is planning to resign the lib dem party in protest at the Welsh Street demolitions) So you will be able to cast a vote for renovation - if you want to.

The liberal party ( old liberal not lib dem) are fronting this. They have only 3 councillors but have been very helpful to residents facing demolition and homelessness across the city. The ballot papers will read liberal candidate - stop demolishing - start renovating.

The other groups in the city who are fighting demolition of decent homes are standing in their wards, and I am standing in Princes Park.

This ward includes Granby St. and the great terraces of Ducie, Jermyn, Hatherly, Ducie and Beaconsfield which join onto Granby St. In particular these streets have been blighted by the local authority, despite being great houses in demand with buyers.

I am hoping you will talk about this strategy with your friends and colleagues and invite them to vote anti-demolition if they can, to show the city council that there is widespread contempt for the waste of good homes. Even if they do not live in a ward where demolitions are currently threatened, they need to be aware the long term plans for the South Central core of the city involved a lot more demolition than is currently known. Plans include removing large tracts of social housing and replacing low income tenants with high earning buyers. The area will be transformed physically and socially, and we are hoping to ensure that more interests than just those of the Private Developers are met by these changes.

As it is the waiting list for affordable rented housing via the council or housing associations stands at 21,000. Every time a street is demolished the displaced residents go to the top of the housing waiting list, resulting in long waits, overcrowding and depopulation. The cost of renovation is far less than that of demolition and new build, whilst the environmental and social damage demolition brings is permanent. Eco - refurbishing the terraced housing would provide efficient modern heritage homes, at a fraction of the cost of demolition.

I hope you will consider voting against waste, and will add your vote to others seeking renovation as a more sustainable option for this great city.

Please forward this e-mail to people you feel may be interested in giving the liberal anti-demolition candidates consideration in the local elections.

As always we are short of resources and helpers, as we are still continuing the Welsh Streets work during the run up to the elections. If you fancy giving us a hand to deliver leaflets, or helping in anyway, with anything please let me know !

Hope all goes well with you.
