Picket/Demo at Liverpool V Maccabi Haifa - 9th August

Merseyside TUC | 05.08.2006 22:17 | Lebanon War 2006 | Anti-militarism | Liverpool

Merseyside TUC, Liverpool TUC, Wirral TUC and Sefton TUC and the
Merseyside Coalition Against the War are supporting the Friends of
Palestine Picket / demonstration at the Liverpool versus Maccabi
Haifa football match on Wednesday 9th August at Anfield and call on
trade unionists to show Israelis that we are totally opposed to
their murderous activities in Lebanon. The football game will be
shown live on Israeli television and the key may well be to bring
banners / placards to show Israeli people exactly what the views of
trade unionists and anti war campaigners are.

I understand leaflets are to be given out to supporters (both inside
and outside of the ground) condemning the attacks on Lebanon and the
role of the UK and American Governments. Merseyside TUC and
Liverpool TUC in particular stress the importance of NO
ENCROACHMENT ON THE PITCH. This would be a negative move, and given
the events at Hillsborough, would antagonise the Liverpool
supporters and turn them against us.

Expect Heavy Handed Police Operation Towards ProtestAs

06.08.2006 01:38

As a United supporter and supporter of justice and self determination for the Palestinian people I remember when my team played an Israelie club in the Champions League a few years back. the GMP and the club stopped anybody bringing in any items that they deemed 'OFFENSIVE' towards the visitors and confiscated Palestinian flags, banners, badges, posters and leaflets and threatened to refuse admitance to anyone who wanted to show support for Palestine inside the ground. the protest OUTSIDE was surrounded by dozens of RIOT police thus effectively keeping banners and flags hidden from the media and onlookers.this also meant that those on the demo could not distribute leaflets or engage in discussion with anybody who wanted to find out more about the plight of the Palestinian people and their treament by the ZIONIST IDF armed forces. the protesters were also threatened with arrest if the chanted any slogans that would be seen to be 'OFFENSIVE' towards the travelling supporters whilst the police did nothing to stop travelling support confronting the protesters and shouting shouting racist anti Palestine abuse at them. protesters were also racially abused by pro ZIONIST MACCABI fans. so dont be suprised if Merseyside Police act in a similar mannner. good luck with the protest whilst I will be continuing to fight theBNP attempts to try and recruit amongst supporters at FC UNITED NO PASSARAN FIGHT FASCISM IN ALL ITS FORMS RED ARMY FACTION.

Takes me back to my football days

When people would smuggle things through turnstile searches by cutting false pockets into their clothes. In the back of a padded jacket was the best place because if the cut was hemmed correctly or even sewn all the way up it made them almost impossible to spot. Round the bollocks was also a popular place as was inside scarves.

I would reiterate the NO INCURSIONS ON THE PITCH call because that is incredibly illegal under the football offences act and conviction can result in 10 year banning orders and restrictions on international travel.

Get a life

Surely a game of football is a time for reconciliation; a time to forget about the terrible problems in the Middle East and just sit and watch 22 men play a British game in one of the greatest football arenas in the world. I can't help but notice that support for this demo comes from the usual suspects: Trade Unionists. Your days are over. Noone belongs to trade unions any more. Thatcher finished you off. And now, with little power or sway in the domestic arena, you are forced to shout and scream about a little Israel, continually attacked by it's neighbours, and facing the daily threat of destruction. Get a life guys and just let us watch football in peace.

Your advice is:

"Get a life guys and just let us watch football in peace"

Please can I have this life back:  http://www.indymedia.org.uk/images/2006/08/347271.jpg

and while you're watching your football in peace, do think of this guy and how he might get some peace......  http://news.independent.co.uk/world/fisk/article1217826.ece

Feel free to post up your suggestions.

Thanks

What ridiculous action

09.08.2006 11:13

I hope you gain little support for your demonstration - what an outrage...you clearly have no idea what the israelis have been through over the past years....maybe you should join the terrorists

Rach

"maybe you should join the terrorists"

09.08.2006 12:02

Now why would anyone want to join the IDF?

You clearly ignore what the Palestinians and Lebanese have been through lately ......

lebanon war

09.08.2006 12:05

the israeli football team and civilians have about as much power to stop the invasion of lebanon and murder of it's civilians as the british people had with the invasion and occupation of iraq. so until you sort your own government and military out there is no point in pointing the finger at another state.

oh joe!

The majority of Israelis support the carnage inflicted by their elected war criminals on Palestine and Lebanon.

Just cos you don't give a fuck doesn't mean its right.

Peace needs a major change in the conscience of the majority of Israeli's and boycott of sports is an effective way of encouraging it - ala South Africa.

As for your claim that Brits should sort out their own state before pointing a finger at Israel, you've clearly missed the point. The UK state and Israeli state are joined at the hip, and Israeli aggression puts all of us in danger.
