November 11th is Rememberance Day

Lewis | 06.11.2006 17:44 | Anti-militarism | Liverpool

a day to remeber all the military deaths since 1918.

BUT.

They don't remeber the Iraqis, Palestinians, Afgans, Germans, French, Belgians, Kuwaitis, Kosovans, Serbians, and many, many, many, more civilian casualties who have died in the 300+ wars since 1918.

Over 200 Million people have been slaughtered in Wars around the World, since the "war to end all wars" (WW1)

That's why.

Liverpool School Students Against War
have organised a DIE IN to take place on 11.11.06 at 11am, during the 2 minutse silence.

A die-in is where a group of people pretend to be dead and lie on the ground covered in "blood".

The Die-in will bring the toll that war costs to the streets of Liverpool and show that we, the new generation, will not stand for this NONSENSE any longer. That we want the killing and war mongering to STOP, so that the world can live in peace.

SO, IF YOU CAN,

Come to the Big T.V. by Virgin, at 10.45 on 11th November.
We will "die" during the two minutes silence, and then walk up Bold Street to the Egg cafe, and then from there to the Cenotaph in front of St. Georges Hall.

IF YOU CAN'T BE THERE,

One thing you can do is, instead of wearing a red poppy on Rememberance day, wear a WHITE poppy, of which the proceeds go towards teaching about peace, and working for a culture of Peace.

Take ACTION on rememberance day, and send a message to the world leaders, that enough is enough. We want the KILLING to END NOW!!

Lewis

White Poppies - where are they?

I'd love to wear a white poppy, but have never seen them for sale anywhere. Where can those of us who ain't full-time protesters get our hands on them?

unusual

06.11.2006 18:17

times call for unusual combinations - this seems to me IN THE SPIRIT of the actual meaning of the day, rather than against it. This doesnt interfere with other commemorations, etc - but adds to them. If a bit of effort to explain this in press releases etc - for this event as much as others of the same sort - (even a message to the local British Legion (it mightnt get a response - but members hear about it, that helps, perhaps some could join in, or support in other ways . . . .) the leaflets etc could draw from bits of the actual past of the 11/11 itself - as summarised in the
" . . . . to remember : does that help ? "
piece in the indymedia uk newswire "vaults" - put it into the search engine at the top of this "newswire" column.
The bits about the "eleventh of every month" campaign ( - ditto - ) might have some interest, as might the recent piece about the post WW2 commemoration . . . .
cheers.
It IS so very worth doing. . . . so
unusual times call for unusual . . . .

. . . . peace symbol -
it aint "either or", is it.
that "getting played off against each other" thing is SO over
or we are

- check the actual background - that ". . . . to remember : does that help? " bit,
also the " 2 remember the scams " bit, even the "if the small peaces aint working, try the "big peace" ( comments )

- "tory" types have never found a way to agree with the peace movements as much as they do in these times - opinions are shifting - new information is listened to -
dont lets allow ourselves to get used as unwitting spoilers

When its the people in charge of the army that have come up with some of the most cutting phrases against this war, as much as mothers, sons, daughters - then we are making sense - but we need to ALL step out of the "cardboard cut-out", easy-to-predict images the "meja" tries to frame us with or deafen us to each other with.

A few corrections required

So you're students well I guess it aint history you are studying? Firstly the red poppy represents not only those that have died during 1914-18 not since as you claim 1918, but it primarily is on behalf of British and commonwealth people (not just service personnel) in all conflicts since then so you are quite simply wrong! As for it not representing French, Germans etc it does, those that were on our side. I honestly think you are right to highlight civilian deaths in conflicts since 1945, but to do so during the two minute silence on November 11th is shameful, well done you have discredited the 'peace' movement and played into the hands of the daily mail lot who will portray you as silly, petulant and disrespectful towards earlier generations who made noble sacrifices.

Wars

07.11.2006 13:03

No disrespect whatsoever for the poor conscripts who were massacred in various wars. They were forced to 'give their lives' they did not choose to do so - and often for not at all noble causes - such as nationalism, imperialism and the profits of capitalists. That's why these commemorations make me sick and utterly sick.
White poppies mean NO MORE! no more killings and no more wars, no more deaths of civilians and no more deaths of soldiers, and if you can't find a white poppy, why you don't just make it? All it takes is a pin and a bit of paper.

no more!

11th November = International Anarchist Day

Before 1918 the 11th November was always International Anarchist Day

remember . . . .

07.11.2006 18:49

(11/11 ? alberutterbollocks ! - check "2remember the scams" - its happening.)
35 veterans stood in the usa elections today - 34 against the current administration.
all four forces papers have a mutual "leader"piece this week that calls for the secretary for defence to get sacked.
32 USA retired top brass have signed a letter that calls for his resignation.

check the war monument at the bottom corner of hyde park sometime if you walk to green park that way - a bloke flat under a coat, a bloke weighed down with "equipment" - that isnt trying to say war is glorious either

lets stop the spivs, eh.

about time.

( also scroogle - usa election update )
( also - the piece about the commemoration of wars after 1945 from a couple of days ago - when the IMC-UK censors put it back up )

History lesson, for Arthur.

07.11.2006 20:36

I do read history Arthur, as much as I can lay my hands on.

Here,  http://www.ppu.org.uk/poppy/new/tx_swimming.html
Try a wee read of that before you start any more of this "noble sacrifice" nonsense.

red / white

07.11.2006 22:08

I see no contradiction between condemning WW1 as senseless, doing everything to prevent future wars, and acknowledging that those who died on the Allied side in WW2 bravely gave their lives to prevent fascism taking over the world.
I see the white poppy as being justified in the years after WW1 to express revulsion at any celebration of the carnage, but these days I just think they're futile and liable to be counterproductive.
Red poppies and cenotaph celebrations just don't have the same pro-war triumphalism as they used to.

and so was that

15.11.2006 15:19

Time we buried it.If you don't keep digging up the past maybe we can get out of war.On the other hand anyone want to buy a red rose,or a white one.or a 1066 cross.

Maybe not 'triumphalism', but it certainly helps glorify war and all it's so-called sacrifices.
The weeks before and after Remembrance Day see the Armed Forces best times for recruitment.
I think wearing a white poppy is still perfectly valid.
