Manchester People's Assembly

A Manchester Anarchist | 05.06.2003 15:05

This conference is called by Manchester Stop the War. We want to learn lessons from the anti-war movement and to see if the people that it brought together can keep together; not just opposing the was and occupation, but on wider issues. We hope to link into the network of assemblies and forums that are springing up across the UK and the world.

Manchester People's Assembly

Sick of politicians' lies? Let's shape our own future!

This is an opportunity to discuss alternatives to the current system, where governments drop bombs on children to satisfy the greed of multinational corporations. The theme of the People's Assembly is real democracy -- how do we get control over our own lives. This means that the assembly istelf will be a democratioc forum, aimed at giving a voice to the most people possible.

This conference is called by Manchester Stop the War. We want to learn lessons from the anti-war movement and to see if the people that it brought together can keep together; not just opposing the was and occupation, but on wider issues. We hope to link into the network of assemblies and forums that are springing up across the UK and the world.

This is a chance for everyone to have their say: community groups, trade unionists, school students, anti-racist and anti-fascist groups, environmental campaigns, black organizations and anyone else who wants to make a difference.

We want this Assembly to be as broad and inclusinve as possible.

On the day there will be various small workshops and discussions, plus an autonomous space, set up and run by young people. The final session will include reports from the workshops, general debate and also announcements of upcoming events.

Come along. Tell your friends. Help make it a success!

There will be another People's Assembly in a few months time. Would you like to help organize it? Please get in touch.

fair or not?

It is very good idea in principle but with the existence of the web I think most concerned people know what is going on, so the challenge is to prevent the ordinary people from going back to sleep. The people who took part in the 15FEB. demo where are they and where are their opinions about the occupation of Iraq? The Iraqi resistance have been presented as trouble makers and the americans respond by increasing the number of their occupying troops. To combat this why do not the resistance here get real. Why do not we break the media rubbish by talking directly to the British people, leaflets, stalls and writing on the walls ..etc Why do not the law professionals here sue any company which tries to take advantage of the current situation in Iraq (you can extend that to any western evil situation on the face of earth) Since money is the blood of these multi-nationals why do any company is threatned and if necessary sued for their criminal exploitation of the others misserable life.

(I think) All what it take is a person with low income instructing a solicitor to sue ..etc I have warned the trade and industry secratary that any company which goes to iraq will face prosecution because what they will be doing is illegal earning. The current situation in Iraq is illegal whether WMD found or not. Her department will be sued for issuing illegal permissions. Anybody agree or not?

i find it difficult to comprehend the notion that because this media exists other forms of discourse are negated .the reality is that millions of people dont have access to this because of lack of finances or skills or both are they not relevant.perhaps we should look to 20th cent media formats such as real time radio to work in conjunction with the 19th and 21st cent formats currently employed
