ATTENTION! Pro-Palestinian picket due to be attacked!

LB | 27.10.2004 22:25 | Anti-racism | Free Spaces | Social Struggles | World

News has recently come to light that the Victory To The Intifada picket of Marks and Spencer (Britain's biggest corporate supporter of Zionism) is to be attacked again this Saturday, 30th September, by organised fascists.

The past few months has seen an acceleration of the attacks on the picket in Manchester- from the Labour council, its racist police, Marks and Spencer, and fascist supporters of Israel. This week the Zionists have apparently organised a pro-Israel rally outside M+S to coincide with Saturday's picket. From our experience these thugs are only able to mobilise en masse on rare occasions so they will have been building up to this one for weeks (to bring their Likud cronies up from London). To make matters worse the Manchester City Council meeting on Wednesday discussed a protocol which will attempt to undermine our democratic rights to protest and which was aimed SPECIFICALLY at the picket of M+S. Labour again displayed their contempt for the oppressed as known Zionist Councillors ridiculously called US racist! And this week Israel has once again intensified its genocidal siege on Gaza butchering tens of Palestinians and with our Labour government's full support!

Once again we call on all democrats, all progressive-minded people, all supporters of justice, to defend the picket of M+S from racist attacks and from those who wish to see an end to the 4 year old solidarity protest.

DEFEND THE RIGHT TO PROTEST!
SAY NO TO FASCISM!

Picket Marks and Spencer on Market Street, Manchester, at 12 o'clock every Saturday. Especially this Saturday!

Misleading information

31.10.2004 16:12

I am disturbed by two misleading comments posted on the site
I believe we will lose credibility if we spread factually incorrect items

Firstly the claim that there was to be and "attack" on the M & S demo.
Just because another group chooses to counter demonstrate does not constitute an "attack"

I was also very surprised to see someone alleging that Manchester City Council had passed a resolution against the right of the M & S demonstrators to demonstrate

Firstly the mover of the original motion which actually sought to protect the rights of demonstrators, far from being against them, nade it absolutely clear this was aimed at all demonstrators and counter demonstrators, and was ABSOLUTELY NOT ABOUT THE M & s DEMO.
It is mischievous and misleading to suggest otherwise.
The amendment that was proposed and carried merely strenghtened the motion by addiing that everyone has the right to demonstrate as long as they are not "offensive" "racist"
"antisemitic" or "Islamophobic"
You only have to read the amendment to see it is not anti the M & S demo.
In fact yesterday the police afforded the demo the utmost protection and support, and it was only when one of the demonstrators got out of hand that there was any hint of restricting them.

I also felt the attempt to suggest there was deliberate disruption of the Gerald Kaufman meeting was seriously inaccurate.
the meeting progressed relatively uneventfully until it became clear that the chairman had decided to stifly any meaningful debate or any challenge to what the speakers had said.
At that time strenuous calls were made for the debate to be allowed to continue, but they fell on deaf ears.
Many people there felt it was unfair to leave some very inaccurate things the speakers had said unanswered which was why the meeting got out of control.
