Preston Prepares to Oppose the Database State

Dave Page | 17.03.2008 23:25 | Social Struggles | Technology | Liverpool

Preston locals are planning to kick-start a new local group of the national NO2ID campaign against identity cards and the Database State. A meeting is being held at the Bluebell pub on Church Street at 7:30pm on Thursday 20th March to re-launch the campaign locally.

Local frustrations are high following data losses from the Government and the recent Delivery Plan which talked about how to "coerce" the public onto the National Identity Register. Furthermore, the Government's own Crosby Report listed ten principles for a low-cost, secure, useful ID card scheme, all of which the Government has broken. Everybody is invited to the meeting to learn how they can oppose these expensive, intrusive and useless schemes.

Former Preston co-ordinator Tia Purple and Manchester co-ordinator Dave Page will be on hand to answer any questions about the campaign and how people can work effectively to raise awareness of the Government's database state and rally local opposition against it.

Dave Page said "NO2ID is possibly the largest active civil liberties campaign in the UK, and we are reliant on our dozens of local groups, of all sizes and levels of activity. Our local groups are vital for keeping the issues of identity cards, biometrics and large-scale databases in the public eye, providing informed criticism and provoking debate. I am looking forward to helping Preston get a new local group off the ground, and offering whatever support the large and active Manchester group can provide."

NO2ID is the UK-wide, non-partisan campaign opposing the government's planned ID card and National Identity Register. We bring together individuals and organisations from all sections of the community and seek to ensure that the case against ID cards and the database state is forcefully put forward in the media, in the corridors of power and at grassroots level. We continue to actively campaign on all fronts for the abolition of the ID scheme and repeal of the Identity Cards Act 2006.
