Wildcat Strike at Risley Prison

MULE | 18.11.2009 17:19 | Social Struggles | Workers' Movements

Prison officers at Risley Prison in Warrington and at two prisons in Lancaster took part in wildcat strikes today in solidarity with staff in Liverpool, who walked out on Tuesday. The strike by hundreds of officers forced the governor of HMP Liverpool to bow to the pressure and agree to talks with the Prison Officers’ Association (POA).

The strikes started over allegations of bullying by senior management of HMP Liverpool. Though today’s wildcats were taken in solidarity with the Liverpool action, they also seem to have been prompted by concerns over health and safety at Risley, where staff cuts are being threatened to make up for a £1 million budget deficit.

Staff at Preston prison as well as those at Wandsworth and Cardiff added to the pressure by threatening to join the strike unless managers agreed to talks with the concerned parties. Mark Freeman from POA confirmed that since their demands had been met all workers would be returning to work.

“The Prison Service, after 25 hours, gave us what we asked for on the very first hour of this walkout. If they had given it to us then none of the other prisons would have walked out,” he said.

While the strikes went on the prisoners were said to be locked in their cells and the jail staffed solely by managers. The prison service claims that the facilities were safe and secure during the strikes, a claim the POA denies.

Ropes Not Rises

Give these scummy bastards a nice phat noose to go top themselves if they're that uncomfortable with 'bullying'. Funny they don't call it bullying when they lock prisoners in their cells isn't it, or beat them for not comforming.

These wankers don't even deserve the title of being working class, just dirty traitors to their own.

Ropes Not Rises is what I say!

people who rape, murder & rob ruthlesly off average people deserve prison

they are class traitors, what would you rather do send them to prison or knee cap them?, is that better??. Yes prison gaurds are working still for a corrupt system, but many seem now to want to fight & make it really democratic. Prisons are needed for violent offenders, of course there are many inside who shouldnt be there, non violent political+non violent low level criminals etc & its the prion officers union who is leading calls to say this.
Many in prison unions & on the streets are saying lock up people like Blair for war crime, what would you propose??, even if we have a democratic revolution tomorrow there will still be a need for prisons&reform centres, though this would eventually lessen.

This is a very unopinionated piece. Where does The Mule stand on support for the POA?

Birdman raises 2 interesting theoretical questions. On Nonviolence:

Nonviolence and its Violent consequences:

How Nonviolence protects the State:
 http://www.akpress.org/2005/items/hownonviolenceprotectsthestate

On Prison I haven't found any documents I can recommend. It seems to me that if we want to live in an equal society then there will be no prisons. It's important to remember that POA members do "rape, murder & rob ruthlessly off average people"; watch Scum if you don't believe me. It's true that there are social problems but that does not in itself prove that inequalities maintained by state violence are the best way to deal with them. We are getting in to Utopian Fiction but one idea is to warn and educate people and to use expulsion and or even death as a last resort.
