oxford brookes stop the war society

matthew morton | 26.06.2003 19:32 | Anti-militarism | Oxford

oxford brookes stundent union executive agrees to affiliate the Oxford Brookes Stop the War society.

Tuesday 1 pm there was a meeting of the officers on repesentative of the Oxford Brookes Student Union. Several societies were affiliated, the Royal Naval society was not, on grounds of why the hell would we want to encourage that sort of thing by giving it money.
The O.B stop the war society was affiliated, we talked of arms dealing, future wars, debates and workshops, party for peace, being anti all wars not just those waged by the west. It was good, as simple, but very useful victory. It will ensure that next year our activities will have a smoother ride.

keep blowing that trumpet

peace in our time
peace in our time

keep at it
the biggest political event in the history of brookes happend on the day when war broke out
a couple of hundred people left the college in protest to listen to speakers and the aciton plan for the day
a teach in happened
people, outraged at the illegal war, marched into town, blocking the road letting fly their rage with this government

the city was brought to a standstill for the night

for many this was the first political thing they were involved in.
the war has politicised people, maybe the apathy might get shaken off

keep blowing that trumpet

is a very good article about
The Rise of Open Source, Network-Based Movements

it was written after the largest co-ordinated protests in human history. 15th feb 2003]

"Last Saturday between twelve and twenty million people around the world took to the streets to protest the rush to war with Iraq. While the millions marching in major cities received most media attention, there were also protests in thousands of smaller cities, towns and villages world-wide. Letterkenny saw 15 marching, 600 demonstrated on the Shetland Islands and even McMurdo Station in Antarctica saw 50 people voicing their opposition to war. While the numbers of people involved in the global demonstrations will never be fully known, what is clear is that these were the largest co-ordinated protests in human history."
