War Tattoo at RAF Fairford

Suzie Dow | 09.07.2003 10:50 | Anti-militarism | Oxford

Over the weekend of the 17th- 20th July, there will be an "air tattoo" held at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire .

There is expected to be a good deal of protesting about the event, given that the base was a major focal point for anti-war protests during the recent war - many of the bombs dropped on Iraq were dropped by Fairford planes. Peace campaigners are concerned that the event is being advertised as something of a family day out, and would like to those who are thinking of attending to remember that Fairford is not a theme park, or a nice spot for a picnic, but a place that houses weapons of mass destruction that have recently been used to kill civilians. Security is rumoured to be high on the day, and queues to get in are expected to be very lengthy. Those wishing to attend the event should be prepared for delays. Those wishing to register their objections to it have been contacting Waitrose supermarkets, and anywhere else locally that has been advertising the event. Anyone wishing to join the demonstration against the tattoo on the day should assemble in Fairford village at midday.

Meet St Giles 10.30am for car pool

It is important that as many people as possible go to the tattoo (19.7.03) to voice their opposition and make the link clear between the planes and their purpose ie killing and maiming

Meet at St Giles near Asmolium at 10.30 and bring a car if you have for a car pool to get people to Fairford for the demo.

Business as usual at Fairford

I live very close to the airbase (Kempsford), and have witnessed, with horror and frustration, the build up for this yearly celebration of the ability to destroy human life. I witnessed the USAF bombing runs during both middle east conflicts.
Now iI am obliged to drive past armed sentries, standing in front of BEA sponsorship banners ,thus confirming the coporate warlike attitude this evnt fails to hide.
This event is an effrontary to the values of peace, harmony and compassion.
Pressure must be made on all sponsors not to renew their support. They will not lose face, but gain respect and credibility.
