Andrew Smith invited to speak at Amnesty meeting?

copied from takeaction_2002 | 26.08.2003 19:46 | Anti-militarism | Oxford

Sleazy pro-war MP for East Oxford, Andrew Smith, is
rumoured to be speaking at an Amnesty International
meeting this Friday.

--------------------------------------------------------------
Friday 29th August 7.30pm Andrew Smith MP talking at Amnesty meeting.
Paulin Centre for Human Sciences, 58 Banbury Rd. This is a closed
meeting.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Why is Amnesty having this meeting? Why haven't they condemned his
pro war stance? Why does Andrew Smith continually refuse a public
debate on the war in Oxford?
He is complicit in, what is being clear to even the strongest
supporters, an unjustified war. The Labour party put party politics
before principle and re-selected him.
Let Andrew Smith know what you think of his career before principle
position on the war.

Editorial control?

Most IMC collectives have limited editorial control over posts that are blatantly racist, sexist, or homophobic. Apart from that, Indymedia is what it is made by the residents of Oxford who chose to contribute to it. That can mean that the tone can sometimes be 'low', but it can also lead to some wonderful exchanges of ideas. It depends on how one approaches it.

As for all of this talk of WWII, such comparisons really are specious. I would've fought in WWII, actually, but that has absolutely nothing to do with opposition to the war on Iraq. It's not as if everyone opposed to that war is a pacifist (or most of Britain is pacifist...), but they opposed that conflict specifically because it was illegal, immoral, resulted in thousands of civilian deaths, solved nothing, was based on lies and corporate greed, etc etc etc etc.

For a reason why I opposed the war, read this by Pablo Neruda...he says it better than I could:

You all may ask: And where are the lilacs?
And the metaphysics covered with poppies?
And the rain which often struck
upon his words
leaving them pocked
and full of birds?
I'll tell you now what's happening to me.

I used to live in a part
of Madrid that had bells,
and trees and clocks.

From there could be seen
the parched face of Castile
like a leathery sea.

My house was called
the house of flowers, for everywhere
geraniums blazed; it used to be
a lovely house
full of dogs and children.

Raul, do you recall?
Do you recall, Rafael?
Federico, do you recall,
deep there in the earth,
do you recall the balconies of my house
where June's light filled your lips with flowers?
Oh, my dear brother!

And one morning it was all ablaze,
and one morning firestorms
erupted from the earth
consuming creatures,
and from then on, flames,
gunpowder from then on,
and from then on, blood.

Outlaws with planes and Moors,
outlaws with rings and titles,
outlaws blessed by black monks
came through the heavens to kill children,
and in the streets the blood of children
flowed simply, like blood from children.

You all may ask why his poetry
doesn't speak to us of the dream, the leaves,
the great volcanoes of his native land?

Come and see the blood in the streets,
come and see
the blood in the streets,
come and see the blood
in the streets!"
