Kabul Coup??

With the bomb blasts in Kabul this week rumors abound. One rumor is that a military coup is imminent and the bombings were a lead up showing that Khazai can not protect the people. This is not out of the question. Many on the streets view Khazai as weak and not in control. Some are even looking back to the Taliban time saying they knew how to keep order and discipline. This is not in question while their methods were. The majority does not want the Taliban back but may not be opposed to a military dictatorship. By allowing war lords into his government Khazai may have stored up trouble for himself. Typical Afghan politics over the centuries has been uniting against a common foe but at the same time plotting against each other. Victory brings war between the allies. This happened after the defeat of the Russians and could easily repeat itself. Afghans say that after the worms have eaten the body they start feeding on each other.

If the Americans treated people better, if prisoners were not tortured, if Gutanimo Bay did not exist and if people had an alternative to fighting against the destruction of their opium and thus income then the Taliban would have far less support than they do. The increased fighting in the south and east erodes Khazai’s authority and makes him seem weak which may open the door to a coup.

I am going to have to get registered with the British Embassy in Kabul. If there is an evacuation of internationals I do not want to be left in the middle of a coup.
