Pope set to visit Oxford

Hale | 16.09.2010 22:15 | Oxford

Pope in Littlemore tomorrow evening

The Pope will be in Littlemore, I know it sounds weird but bare with me, tomorrow evening after his London and Birmingham trips.

He will be visiting John Henry Newman's old home (he is expected to receive beatification from the Pope), on Cottage Lane opposite The Golden Ball.

Large and no doubt costly police /Vatican security operation in the area earlier to "secure" it. Even sealing the drains.

Hopefully more details to follow in the morning and a specific(ish) time.

Update via email

This now looks unlikely. There was a visit by some Italian dignitary last
night that I didn't know about (I sent the email from work). So it will
most likely be just that. Can't imagine they'd try and close the Golden
Ball on too consecutive nights. There'd be riots!

Had been told a couple of times it would be the Pope today, including by a
PC at the time of the security sweep. It also fitted with John Henry
Newman's beatification and Italian security. So my apologies.

Anti-pope nutters arrested

Five held over Pope terror alert
breaking news

Five men have been arrested by the Metropolitan Police in London in relation to a potential threat to the Pope.

The arrests were made at 0545 BST at addresses in London after counter-terrorism officers received intelligence of a potential threat.

The five men have been taken to a central London police station.

Officers are continuing searches at premises connected to the raids.

In a statement from Scotland Yard, the Metropolitan Police said that the five men had been arrested in an operation launched by officers from the force's Counter-Terrorism Command.

The five were arrested on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism under the Terrorism Act 2000.

The five men are 26, 27, 36, 40 and 50 years old. They were arrested in an armed operation at business premises where searches are continuing.

Residential premises in north and east London are also being searched. Officers have not found any hazardous items.

Reality Check

Anti Pope Nutters?

17.09.2010 12:35

How do you know they're 'Anti-Pope Nutters' and not just some Asians being arrested to justify the out of proportion state security operation and also clamp down on tomorrows protest in London?

And also, being anti-pope doesn't make you a nutter - in fact most would say you're more likely to be a nutter if your pro-pope.

Reality What?

Anti-pope nutters?

Breaking news. Some people have been arrested. There's no smoke without fire, so something must be going on.

But former head of terrorism says ...
"The duty on the police is to err on the side of caution, even if someone is not charged, rather than not acting and finding out you had a real plot which came to fruition."
 http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/sep/17/pope-visit-terror-police-arrests-street-cleaners

Erring on the side of cation is very different to saying that anything of note has happened. People were arrested because the police wanted to err on the side of caution rather than having any evidence.

But, even aside from this, to suggest that anybody that wants to harm the Pope (if that is even what has been suggested - it's really not clear) is the same as people that want to say the Pope and the religion he heads has to admit they have some problems they need to sort out is bollocks. It's the same as defending the Pope, and therefore saying that proven & documented child abuse mean that if you're a Catholic, then you think sexual abuse of children in OK.

Rat Sing, Errr
