more about the antiwar demo in Edinburgh, Sunday 26th of January.

Hundreds of people 'spontaneously' took to the streets of Edinburgh yesterday (Sunday 26th Jan) to demonstrate their opposition to the US/UK attack on Iraq. A jolly carnival of people & bicycles made its way to the Scottish Parliament and then to the US consulate with letters proclaiming the folly of this impending war. Despite it's slightly illegal nature, the police were pretty accommodating - although no-one was getting near the US consulate (what were they
afraid of?)

I saw an old lecturer of mine, I saw an 8-year old girl banging a biscuit tin with a wooden spoon and I spoke to a woman who hadn't been on a demo since the mid-80s. The threat to Iraq (let's face it, to us ALL) by US/UK forces is mobilising people from all walks of life.
People know that this is a war of economics and politics, a war for oil and power in the middle east. I hope many similar demonstrations will take place all over Scotland between now and the 15th Feb - when we'll see the mother of all Scottish demonstrations. See you there!
