Scottish CND upcoming events

fwd | 07.09.2003 14:08 | Anti-militarism

announcements copied out of an email about forthcoming actions and events more or less associated with Scottish CND. Some of them a bit vague in date make the announcement preferably published as an article rather than on protest net.

Scottish author Alasdair Gray (Author of ‘Lanark’ and other influential Scottish novels) supports “No More Lies – No More Lives” protest against the US occupation of Iraq and for Justice for Palestine on Saturday 27th September:
“I support the Scottish Coalition for Justice Not War for reasons too many and well known to repeat here. People who think it right to ignore these reasons believe the USA, with British support, can use their unprecedentally vast store of destructive weapons to police the world, without United Nations support.
No single state or group of states can do such a thing: especially when managed by governments whose main care is to increase the profits of the richest private companies within their borders.”

“No More Lies – No More Lives”
On Saturday 27th September, the Scottish Coalition for Justice Not War will be holding a rally in Edinburgh in support of the demonstration in London on the same day.
Speakers include Colin Fox MSP; Ian Hamilton QC; Eleanor Scott MSP; Wael Shawish; Susan Karin; Isobel Lindsay.
12 noon, The Mound Place, Edinburgh.

On the same day at the rally, the Scottish Coalition will be launching a petition campaign to get the Lord Advocate to indict Tony Blair for misleading Parliament and taking Britain to war without a UN mandate.
Everyone attending the rally will be asked to join a mass public signing of the petition and to take copies away for friends and family to sign.

Leaflets and posters available from Scottish CND more details: 0141 423 1222 or  scnd@banthebomb.org

Help publicise this protest: Join us at Scottish CND’s weekly stall in Buchanan Street precinct Glasgow, every Saturday from midday to 5pm.
Woman’s drum band She-boom will be busking for us during the day at the stall on Saturday 6th September – this will be an excellent opportunity to raise money and attract a lot if publicity for the protests in Edinburgh and London. More details: Phill at Scottish CND.

Make a day of it! The STUC, the Scottish Trades Union Congress, is organising a demonstration to take place at Dungavel Detention Centre on Saturday 6th September at 12 noon.
This event aims to build on the growing public concern in opposition to Dungavel and will coincide with the second anniversary of its opening. 10 buses will leave George Square in Glasgow at 11am, returning at approximately 1pm (in time for you to help at the CND stall!) Contact either Rozanne Foyer or Hlelen Carson at the STUC for more information on 0141 337 8100.

Monday 8th – Sunday 14th Nuclear Peace Programme Exhibition and events: Hillhead Library, Byres Road, Glasgow with displays, talks and discussion groups including Trident Ploughshares, John Mayer (author of ‘Nuclear Peace – the story of the trial of the Greeenock Three’) and Scottish CND. Midday till library closing every day.

Monday 22nd September Ulla Roder trial starts in Kirkcaldy High Court.
Expected to last two weeks Ulla Roder is on trial for damaging a Tornado warplane to stop it from taking part in the war on Iraq. The Free Ulla Campaing has organised accommodation for people wishing to attend the Court case to show support for Ulla. Vigils and public meetings are planned for outside the court and during the trial. The campaign urgently needs to find anyone who can help take shorthand notes of what is said in court and anyone who can help transcribe those notes. If you can help in this way please contact the Free Ulla Campaign at  freeulla@hotmail.com or  scotland@motherearth.org or visit  http://www.free-ulla.org

Tuesday 9th September: Vigil outside Kirkcaldy Court in support of Ulla – more details from the address above.

September 19- 21: Glasgow, First International Human Rights Film Festival, organised by Spirit Aid more details from:  http://www.spiritaid.org.uk/festival.asp

Depleted Uranium actions Leaflets about the use of Depleted Uranium are now available from Scottish CND. These new leaflets make the connection between what is happening at the Dudnrennan DU test ranges in Galloway, SW Scotland as well as what has happened in Iraq and the links with US plans for more nuclear weapons and weapons in space.

Please lobby your MSP to support motion S2M-248 against the use of Dundrennan for testing a new US electromagnetic “SuperGun” by Green MSP Chris Balance. This gun will be able to fire projectiles at 7500 mph – a speed of several miles a second! It is suspected that one possible reason for the SuperGun being tested in Scotland and not in the US is that it is
intended to fire DU with it.
MSPs supporting the motion to date include: Mark Ballard, Mark Ruskell, Sandra White, Frances Curran, Carolyn Leckie, Stewart Maxwell, Rosie Kane,
Tommy Sheridan, Rosemary Byrne, Robin Harper, Patrick Harvie, Colin Fox,
John Swinburne, Shiona Baird, Eleanor Scott, Alex Neil, Elaine Smith.

Advance Notice: Sunday 12th October “Star Wars and the US drive to global domination” Conference examining US plans for “full spectrum dominance” 12 noon to 5pm Woodside Halls, Glenfarg Street, Glasgow. £3 or £5.
