Demonstrators Protest at Edinburgh Prison

Angela Davis | 08.07.2005 17:30 | G8 2005 | Repression | World

Around 100 people demonstrated today Friday 8th July at Saughton prison Edinburgh. They showed their support for all arrested during and around the G8 demos, including those still in Saughton jail itself. At least seven prisoners from the Carnival for Full Enjoyment are still behind bars there, plus probably more from later protests.

A banner proclaiming support for the prisoners was held up next to the road to show passing motorists, while demonstrators made as much noise as possible to alert prisoners to what was going on. Slogans were chanted in different languages. The demo lasted for around one and a half hours.

There were many vans of police present, and as the demo was drawing to a close around 5pm the police presence was pretty heavy, but our latest report is that the protestors had dispersed without arrests. The police imposed restrictions on the demo under Section 14 of the Public Order Act.

Around thirteen remanded prisoners from the Carnival for Full Enjoyment have been released on bail, most of them at Edinburgh Sheriff Court today, but at least seven remain inside Saughton. There are also of course many arrests and remands in custody from tuesday, wednesday and later in the week.
