On Saturday 30th April, Environmental Rock 2005 saw a return of the popular all-day environmental awareness and entertainment event at The Hobbit pub in Bevois Valley, Southampton. Around five hundred local residents and students flocked to the venue to listen to bands and acoustic acts, sample the organic food and drink, as well as taking the opportunity to speak to local and national environmentalists about what can be done to reduce our impact on the planet.

Southampton's Mayor Harryman attended the event and found it so interesting that he stayed for three hours instead of the scheduled hour. He was particularly interested in the environmentally more sustainable electric car supplied by Dennis Doerffel of the University of Southampton. There were also representatives from Greenpeace, The Green Party, Solent Vegetarians and Vegans and Riverford Organics to name but a few.
Improving on last year's event, there were three acoustic acts to compliment the main bands who played inside. The event got off to a chilled out start with a very lyrical Hayley Angel, followed by The Velleities who evoked memories of Kraftwerk. Next up were Dry Eye Scenario with an astoundingly good set to get the pub rocking. For the Fever played the mid-afternoon slot and the bill was topped off by the not-so-local boys of Loads of Vertigo.
The sun came out, and people stayed throughout the afternoon to take in information (and organic beers). Event organiser Helena Gunton said "it's great that there is such a cross section of the community here. The event is designed to get people thinking about what we can do to minimise our impact of the environment and it is wonderful that so many people have chosen to come along with their families and friends to hear the message".
