London Bombings

Peacenik | 09.07.2005 10:46 | South Coast

A vigil was held yesterday by the Peace Statue in Brighton in support of those affected by the bombings on Thursday 7th July.

Gathering at Peace Statue
Gathering at Peace Statue

As peace activists, we in Sussex Action for Peace wanted to show our sympathy and support for the people affected by the terrible bomb attacks in London. About 40 people gathered at the peace statue on Hove Lawns today to show our respect for the dead. We listened to peace songs, held a minute’s silence and people spoke about the implications of the attacks.

We’ve always said that going to war in Iraq would make the world a more dangerous place – and now people living and working in London have experienced this firsthand. Our country has been at war with Iraq for over two years and every day there is like London was yesterday. There can only be a political solution to the scourge of terrorism and the first step is to bring the troops home now.

One day Brighton will stop manufacturing components for weapons that cause exactly the kind of carnage we saw yesterday in London.

Make this wrong a right England!

Okay, here is your chance citizens of London and wider Great Brittian. Get in the streets and demand that your country's troops be pulled out! If you guys don't, your as dumb as the majority of folks here in the United States. I mean, we all know how Bush decieved everyone in this country after 9-11. Americans were fooled by the duplicitous media etc. but Brittian, you guys have even less of a pretense to be in Iraq. At a time I thought the British were wise enough to put two and two together, cause and effect, now I'm not so sure. I sure hope I'm proven wrong. Don't let yourselves or the rest of the sane world down! Get out there in the streets people!

Think about this crazy idea

DO you not think that the fault of the bombings was the bombers - after all they took the decision to place bombs on tubes and kill people and tear families apart.

I am against the war, but I would never feel that killing innocent people would assist that cause.

At some point responsibility must be taken, rather than looking to where the blame could be placed, look at where it should be placed.

It is easy to deconstruct, but whoever made the decision to do this is where the fault lies.

It is those who act as apologists for such acts who create the environment in which terrorism has flourished.

When must people take responsibility

Yes, you are fundamentally correct, the immediate perpetrators responsible must be apprehended, and brought to trial for their crime. Killing is never exusable. However, to fail to look at the larger picture, to fail to step back and try and look at this from an unbaised perspective, gurantees more of the same. The UK will find itself, like America and Isreal, in an endless ping-pong game of death and destruction.

It's easy to remain self-rightous, especially when your "team" gets hit. The only way out of this is to address the larger problem, which is state sponsered terrorism. The UK and the US are up to their necks in this.

Whatever our feelings on the political issue of the war, we support it with our tax dollars and our votes. If we do everything in our power to end suffering that we're the cause of, maybe then can we expect some actual help from the rest of the world to find the criminals who did this.
