Titnore Campers make appeal

C Wright | 02.08.2006 08:45 | Culture | Ecology | Social Struggles | South Coast

Titnore campaigners need to raise £400 at least for legal costs to challenge the possession order granted in the High Court on Thursday July 27.

It is going to cost several hundred pounds, at least £400, for the Titnore campers to lodge an appeal against the possession order granted in the High Court on Thursday July 27. And the deadline is Friday August 11. The campers have occupied one of only two remaining pieces of ancient woodland and wetland in the whole of Sussex which has been slated for development by Tesco and a housing corporation which are planning to build 875 new houses.

Anyone who can help with a cash donation, no matter how small, can now do so at Henry House Hydro Pool, 189 Heene Road, Worthing (near junction with Tarring Road).

If you want to make donations by post check is appreciated but we prefer a crossed postal order. Please make all donations out to the Pork Bolter and send to:

If the appeal cannot be lodged, the eviction is likely to start very soon, so please help if you can!

You could also help us by writing to the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, John Prescott who has responsibility for House Building in England and Wales and also to the local press of Worthing, the Worthing Herald and the Brighton Argus.

Dear Mr
Re. West Durrington Development, West Sussex

I have been passed your letter addressed to our Chairman of Persimmon plc
for me to respond in my capacity of Managing Director for the South Coast region,
which is responsible for the West Durrington proposals.

I am fully aware of the local controversy that exists over this particular Local Plan allocation.
Persimmon Homes and its consortium partners, Heron Land and Taylor Woodrow have worked
within the democratic planning process over a number of years to promote the land for housing
development. Both at structure plan and local plan level, the proposals have been backed up by
independent planning inspectors.

Worthing Borough Council have now resolved to grant planning permission subject to the
signing of a Section 106 Agreement to provide for various community facilities and affordable
housing.

The proposals were accompanied by a comprehensive environmental impact assessment. The
West Durrington Consortium have worked hard to minimise the Environmental Impact of the
scheme, particularly with regards to the safety improvements required to Titnore Lane. I would
remind you that the safety improvements were required prior to the land being proposed for
housing.

The scheme will provide for much needed homes over 200 of which will be affordable.
Persimmon and its partners are committed to creating a quality development at West Durrington.
Whilst it is obvious that we can not appease everyone, I would re-emphasise that the land has
been promoted through the democratic planning process and is therefore a legitimate and
completely justified housing allocation-

I thank you for voicing your concerns but the development will still go ahead.
Yours sincerely
for Persimmon Homes (South Coast) Limited
Darren Jones
Managing Director

So, that is a reply to a letter I sent in July stating that I would not ever use that company until they pull out of the proposed project.

I suggest you write to them politely, but firmly, please don't swear as it makes the campaign
look bad, but do write, and they send a reply so it wastes their money which is good.

It ain't over, til it's over!

save titnore woods please help!
