Arrest warrant for Chris Eubank re: Peace Action

Random | 17.11.2007 01:32 | Other Press | Repression | Social Struggles | London | South Coast

A judge has issued a warrant for the arrest of ex-boxer Chris Eubank after he failed to turn up to court over an unlawful protest in Whitehall.

Eubank was charged after he tried to park his seven-tonne truck outside the gates to Downing Street in May in protest at UK policy in Iraq.

I know it isn't nice to cut and paste, but he is an activist in trouble. Apparently he is abroad, and was expected to turn up in court. Just read the article.

For "activist in trouble" read "egotistical publicity crazed celebrity"

Amazing what they will try and do in order to raise their profile. Bet Ewbank wouldn't even dream of setting foot in Iraq either.

tired of celebrity wankers co-opting the movement

....you would like to come to Brighton and say that to Chris to his face

its nice and easy to type derogatory comments anonymously. Are you suggesting that because Eubank is famous he must loose his right to freedom of speech

Activist my arse. He is a Egotistical moronic monarchy loving tory!

Non-imprisonable offence!?

17.11.2007 12:42

As the offence of 'taking part in proper democratic processes' (ie 'unauthorised demonstration') is not an imprisonable offence DJ Snow, yet again, acts unlawfully in issuing a warrant of arrest.

This isn't exactly the first, second, third, ... time he has acted in this manner towards citizens carrying out their duties, hopefully Eubanks (or his representatives) will be making the unlawfulness of such warrant and imprisonment clear, not only to Snow but also to the higher courts.

Good luck for the hearings.

As for criticism of anyone opposing such illegal legislation and wars, I hardly think it matters who's involved as long as someone is doing something - try criticising the illegal use of force by the police, security services, courts (esp. City of Westminster Magistrates') and worse of all, Parliament. Put your efforts into something useful, like that, instead.

Power to the People.

Like Bono for instance? Or Bob Geldof maybe? Both of whom are regularly criticised for using global issues to boost their publicity and their egos.

Why should I give a toss about some rich wanker who parks his SUV outside Number 10 for a publicity stunt? At the end of the day, his credentials are no greater those of Geldof et al...

I don't think this is a case of anyone 'co-opting ththe movement'. Chris Eubank has taken his own individual action against the war. If you have done something else that you think is more worthwhile then maybe you can share it, so that it might give the rest of us some ideas.

Well it (anti-war campaigning generally) hasn't been entirely successful, but it has probably had at least some effect. However one thing is certain to me which is that those that are in favour of the war have a lot more resources at their disposal - funding, manpower (mainstream media, political parties etc), co-opting general support for 'our boys' in the armed forces etc. That doesn't mean that anti-war organisations (Stop the War Coalition, CND and others etc) have been perfect - they haven't.

Power to the celebs!

17.11.2007 22:33

Sod the cynics. More power to Chris. We need celebs like him and Mark Thomas promoting nonviolent direct action, freedom of speech, etc. Really couldn't care less if they feed their egos, as long as they inspire people to stand up for what they believe in.
