Summer solstice police operation

pp42 | 19.06.2009 14:46 | Culture | Free Spaces | Oxford | South Coast

A big police operation involving an unmanned drone, horses and drugs sniffer dogs will be launched at Stonehenge tomorrow as huge crowds descend on the ancient site for the summer solstice

Just a heads up for anyone heading down to stonehenge tomorrow for the solstice to be wary. This could just be another provocative media story like those that preceeded the G20 protests. Either way, hope it all passes without incident and everyone enjoys the glorious stones and free space without being beaten, tazered, bitten etc...

Unfortuneately I am working.

I have been on a couple of previous ocassions though. Talking with other activists we have all been a bit pissed off with the way some people behave at Stonehenge. By the morning the area is swamped with litter by lazy idiots who can't be arsed to clear up after themselves, some people have been trying to carve their names on the stones and others are barging people out of the way. Some are there making as much dosh as they can on an industrial scale, good luck but I can see it getting very commercial.
I don't take illegal drugs personally and for legal reasons I will not allow any in my home or in my car but I do believe that those who do want to take them are big enough to make their own decisions and it is none of my business. However it is not too far fetched to assume that the event will in the future act as a magnet for the unsavoury type of drug dealer ie the type who maim people.
Last year I just felt that people were not behaving responsibly in large numbers and by responsible I mean not smashing glass everywhere, not damaging the stones, being kind and polite to others etc. I just feel that it was inevitable that the police would not just stand back any more and use the behaviour of some to stop people going to the stones.
The first time I went I spent a lot of time with someone who was at the Battle of the Beanfield he was very angry when someone tried to damage one of the stones as were others who stopped the person concerned. Last year, loads more people and less concern or capacity to stop such prats.
How do we stop mindless destruction ourselves both at Stonehenge and on large demos/actions? Indeed is leaving loads of litter and glass not too bad, am I overreacting? I just feel that this is part of our heritage and is sacred to many including me and it is not respected as it should be by many who attend the Solstice (along with animals, trees, plants etc).

Was full of burger vans and somebody threw up on me. Not fun. Apparently Avebury is better?
