Demonstration to save Vestas Wind Turbine factory

Wednesday 22nd July , 6.00 pm

Outside the Department of Energy and Climate Change, No 3 Whitehall Place
(off Whitehall, Charing Cross tube)

Just when we need a huge expansion in renewable energy they are closing down the only wind turbine factory in the UK. The government has spent billions bailing out the banks, and £2.3 billion in loan guarantees to support the UK car industry – they can and should step in to save the infrastructure we are really going to need to save us from climate catastrophe.

Gordon Brown has promised to create 40,000 Green Jobs in the next 5 years. The first step towards this would be saving the 600 jobs at Vestas that are under threat.

Nottingham Planning for Natational Climate March

20.07.2009 16:37

The Campaign Against Climate Change ( http://www.campaigncc.org/) referenced by 'Concerned of Sherwood' is part of the coalition arranging National Climate March on December 5th, in advance of the Copenhagen Climate Talks.

There are plans afoot to coordinate the various groups that are likely to be going to the rally from Nottingham.

NOTTINGHAM-COPENHAGEN STEERING GROUP

The UN Climate Talks in Copenhagen on 7-18 December 2009 could be our last chance to secure a global agreement to reduce emissions and build a zero carbon economy before our planet's climate system destabilizes irreversibly.

The Stop Climate Chaos Coalition are organising a major demonstration in London on Saturday 5th December 2009 (see web link below)

A Global Day of Action will follow on Saturday 12th December with synchronised demonstrations in as many places as possible – to call on world leaders to take urgent action on climate change. For those who wish to lobby the negotiators more directly, transport is being organised to Copenhagen (see web link below).

A Nottingham-Copenhagen steering group hopes to progress the following.

1. encourage local groups to engage with the UN Climate Talk agenda

2. co-ordinate and promote participation in local events prior to the Climate Talks

3. co-ordinate arrangements for transport from Nottingham to the December 5th London demonstration

4. co-ordinate solidarity events in Nottingham on the December 12th Global Day of Action.

Further details will follow.

5th December, see -  http://www.stopclimatechaos.org/09/apr/vote-your-feet-stop-climate-chaos

12th December, see - Global Day of Action:  http://www.globalclimatecampaign.org/

Further action: practical info

If you want to go to the Isle of Wight and join the campaign there, as many activists from around the country have already done:

National express coaches go London to Southampton every hour, with funfares from £5 booking online.
Megabus coaches go London to Southampton at 0839, 1039, 1239. 1439, 1600 and 2139, with prices from £6 (the 1600 ones tend to be the cheapest).

Both arrive at the National Express station on Harbour Parade in Southampton, about ten minutes walk from the Isle of Wight ferry terminal (the Red Funnel terminal). To get to the terminal:

1. Head south on Harbour Parade
Go through 1 roundabout

2. Turn left at A3057/W Quay Rd
Continue to follow A3057
Go through 1 roundabout

3. Turn right at Bugle St
Destination will be on the left

Red funnel ferries cost £7 at the desk, and from £4 booking in advance online. When you arrive on the Island, take the chain ferry from East Cowes to Cowes, then the No. 1 bus to Newport from the stop on Newport Rd. To join up with one of the existing support networks on the island contact Ed Maltby on 07775 763 750.

For more information about the campaign on the Island and what you can do, email  edward.maltby@googlemail.com or  pat.rolfe64@googlemail.com

NOTE: It would be helpful if other networks on the island could comment on here giving contact details - it's easier for people to get involved with an existing effort than just to go over by themselves not knowing what they can offer.
