Brighton Cityclean workers to consider new offer to resolve dispute

Rob Macey | 10.11.2009 08:32 | Social Struggles | Workers' Movements | South Coast

Following the commencement of industrial action by Cityclean refuse workers and street sweepers in Brighton the Council has made a new offer to end the dispute.

After only two days of all out industrial action the streets of Brighton are piled high with rubbish and the council found itself under increasing pressure from residents to resolve the dispute.

The action, which is stationed at Cityclean’s Hollingdean depot, is solid with hundreds of GMB members manning the picket line. They have also been joined by local residents, members of sister trade unions such as the CWU, Unite, FBU and Unison who have made donations to the strike fund, and students from Sussex university who have brought refreshments for the striking workers.

A mass meeting will be held at 11am today where the GMB members will consider the new offer made by the Council. If the offer is accepted in principle industrial action will be suspended for a period of up to 56 days while the fine details are negotiated.

Mark Turner, GMB Branch Secretary said:

‘Negotiations have been moving in the right direction and we are now in a position to be able to put an offer to the members. It will be for them to decide whether to accept or reject the offer’

Charles Harrity, GMB Organiser said:

‘The picket has been solid, and particular credit should go to Mark Turner, the local stewards and the members themselves who know what is at stake in this dispute’

Rob Macey, GMB Organiser said:

‘The support from the public has been phenomenal and clearly shows that the people of Brighton are on the side of GMB members in this dispute. Members have been particularly enthused by support from sister trade unions such as the CWU, Unison the FBU and Unite who have all made donations to the strike fund and have supported our members on the picket line’
