anon | 13.03.2010 15:08 | Animal Liberation | Culture | Health | South Coast | World

There is an online gvot petition to end Halal animal slaughter here in the UK.

 http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/halalslaughter/#detail

DEFRA guidelines regarding farmed animals have said that it is an offence to cause any farmed animal avoidable excitement, pain or suffering. There are strict rules on handling, stunning and slaughter.

This post is not aimed necesarily at vegans but at non vegans or non veggies. The road to ending animal cruelty is done step by step.

please bare in mind that this comes from a practicing vegan but, many studies have proven that halal slaughter is actually more "humane" than the conventional bolt gun approach, due to the fact that the animal loses contiousness almost immediately from extreme exsanguination and will definately be dead by the time that any processing occurs. this is especially important with chickens and other fowl as there are many fucking horrible stories of the failure of the electric stunners and birds being plucked/gutted alive etc.

also, apart from possible issues with religious freedoms (although im dubious about raising this in an AR context), people wont suddenly stop eating a specific meat if its banned. Muslims can ONLY eat halal therefore, imports will skyrocket from places that do allow halal butchery, at a time when its getting more and more important to buy local. air miles on products all add up.

animals are an essential part of a sustainable global diet. I support your right not to eat animals but if killing animals was banned where would all the animals go? Should we just kill them all quickly and eradicate all domestic animals in one go? Or should we carry on producing food for them so we can let them live and breed 'naturally'? create a one-off meat mountain or use dwindling resources to support obsolete species? Maybe we should set them 'free' to be eaten by other large predators - oh no then there'd be an unsustainable population boom that'll cause starving suffering to the next generation of predators, not to mention stressful painful deaths for cow and chicken.
Ooh, how about creating a system of farming that uses the manure from animals to enrich the land that we grow our veg in. We could look after the animals and give them a healthy life free from chemicals and stress and a quick death. a proper rotation... you get the picture but you probably won't agree... Ooh, how about creating a society that is tolerant of others customs... fuck it.

All slaughter is barbaric

14.03.2010 07:35

Vivq did a good investigation into Halal slaughter some years ago. As it is practiced in the UK in meat factories it is utterly terrifying and agony for the victims actually contrary to Islamic principles which state that the animal should be killed quickly with one stroke by a highly trained professional, that prayers should be said, that no animal should have any inkling of his or her fate that the animal should be healthy etc and not factory farmed, sick and terrified, Furthermore I have heard that meat is something that should only be eaten if nothing else is available to eat according to the Koran, Halal slaughter was a welfare and health thing, the practice previously was to hack a piece of flesh off of a living animal who would die a slow horrific death.
Let us not pretend for a second that western slaughter is in any way humane, neither Muslims or Jews eat dead pigs some of whom reach the scalding tanks still alive and are boiled to death. Halal slaughter properly done is quite probably mouch more humane than the factory hell holes where living creatures are carved up as they shit themselves in terror, pre stunning is just a sop for the squeamish who want to beliveve that it is all nice, clean and humane, well go and have a look, The Malton bacon factory in Yorkshire where they carve up 10,000 pigs a day is a good place to see for yourself. You will see pigs punched, kicked and electronically prodded as they cower terrified. So much fuss when foreigners beat up dogs before eating them, what is the difference between that and eating bacon after all pigs are certainly at least as intelligentb as dogs?
I have nothing but disgust for both types of slaughter and certainly have no respect for any culture or religion which advocates torturing and killing the helpless for no better reason than taste whether they be Muslim, Jews, Christians or atheists.

How benefit "reforms" will force claimants into working for these places.

14.03.2010 16:57

The UK government has plans to make benefit claimants work for their benefits. This will force people into slave labour at the very places most people do not want to work in ie slaughter houses. This will lead to a resentful "underclass" working in these places for just over a pound an hour and taking it out on the animals.
A documentary showed resentful men torturing living animals in the slaughter houses, taking things out on them and abusing them. One of the workers remarked on an abusive colleague who was torturing a pig : "He's going to get to kill it in a minute anyway, I don't know why he's doing all that, that's out of order..I mean he's gonna kill it anyway in a minute so there's no need for all that".
While the benefit "reforms" have implications all over the country [this could see factories, slaughter houses, building sites etc all signing up to a scheme where they don't have to pay people and we all become slaves...[remember the YOP schemes?] this will lead to people who should not be near another living thing working in these hell holes for slave wages as slave labour...in workhouses basically...and the animals are the ones who will have it taken out on them.

The documentary [as discussed above] also showed what happened in "Kosher" and "Halal" slaughter houses that used machines to kill the animals. This was utterly barbaric and "old school" Halal butchers were against the use of these killing contraptions. Few Halal mass slaughter houses kill the animals in the traditional Halal way [as described by Lyn] and the terrified animals die an evil and inhumane death where Halal butchery machines are used. It is very unlikely that the animals will not know what is going on [one of the rules of Halal] in which case modern Halal where the animals are factory slaughtered isn't truly Halal anyway.

Bolton on Saturday

Halal is the tradition of a section of the working class. It is the state that is our enemy; banning anything empoweres them; fuck that. Anon states "The road to ending animal cruelty is done step by step"; but Anon is not seeking to end animal cruelty but to attack the Muslims.
Meat farming becomes socially unnaceptable when we educate ourselves. One reason to go Vegan, or just to not buy farmed meat, is the argument that "Till all are free, none are free" which came out of the anti slavery movement. This slogan was an argument for solidarity between wage slaves and endentured slaves. I suppose that if you're being hunted then you are free but you're probably not very happy, but this is off subject. Anyway, the governments cunning plan to bring back slavery ought to be one ban we can stop.

Halal meat should be banned in the UK

16.10.2010 00:21

I have seen a video of Halal slaughter and spoken to my local butchers and the animals definitely suffer. They don't lose consciousness for up to 4 mins. Imagine 4 mins of agony and pain being strung upside down choking on your own blood. They slice their throats and then hook them by one of their back legs onto a conveyor belt kicking and screaming as blood is splattered everywhere. The other animals are made to stand and watch what is going to happen to them. It is a dirty and cruel way of killing animals. The meat is not good as the animals are put through so much pain and torture releasing stress hormones throughout their bodies.
