1) FILM : THE KILLING ZONE : THU 26th JUNE
Showing the brutal repression of International observers in
Palestine. Tough to watch - tough reality.
NOTE: THE DATE & VENUE OF THIS EVENT HAVE BEEN CHANGED
 http://www.palsolidarity.org/  http://www.bristolpsc.freeserve.co.uk/
Organised by: www.kebele.org www.bristle.org.uk www.videonetwork.org
DATE: Thu 26th June. TIME: 7.00-9.00pm
PLACE: Kebele. 14 Robertson Rd. Easton. DIRECTIONS BELOW:
 http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?X=361500&Y=174500&scale=10000
SPEAKER: Nancy Rollason. International Solidarity Movement (ISM).
"Palestinians have lived under an illegal occupation for decades.
Through U.N resolutions, the nations of the world have repeatedly
asked Israel to respect international law, stop brutalizing
Palestinians, & end the Occupation of their land. Under the
protection of its powerful ally & benefactor, the U.S, Israel has
been able to continue the occupation, build illegal settlements, deny
the most basic of human rights, & pursue policies aimed at removing
all Palestinians from their homeland.
Israeli violence against civilians in Palestine has worsened, & the
repression of the Occupation has tightened. Many international allies
of the Palestinian cause want to do more than write letters &
demonstrate. They want to do something more dramatic to stop Israeli
attacks on Palestinian neighbourhoods, & to stop the U.S from
massively rewarding Israel for its brutality. They want to take
direct action that will oppose the Occupation & force Israel to
withdraw from the West Bank East Jerusalem, & Gaza." Extract From The
ISM Mission Statement

2) EXHIBITION : 'OUR BLOODY HANDS' : FRI 27th - SAT 28th JUNE
Photography Installation, 'Our Bloody Hands', By Houri Ghamian
DATE: Fri 27th - Sat 28th June. TIME: 5:00-700pm.
PLACE: Opposite Hippodrome. St. Augustiners Parade. DIRECTIONS BELOW:
 http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?gride=358590&gridn=172858&title
"Houri Ghamian is a Kurdish refugee who has lived in the UK for 11
years. Houri works as an interpreter & she's a single mother. Houri
Ghamian is also a poet & photographer. It's good that with such a
busy life & so many commitments, she has still found time to recover
her creativity & express herself so powerfully. Houri has been
actively campaigning against war & on behalf of refugees.
This exhibition is a brave move, as media attention is diverted from
this massacre - the war on Iraq. It is brave because it confronts
people with their complacency towards the war. It is brave because it
exposes the reality of war from the communities who suffer it (Houri
interprets for Afghanis, Iraqis, Iranians & Kurds many of whom have
experienced, in their own flesh, the results of war).
This is the 1st exhibition that Houri has organised for a long time.
This is the result of the disappointment & rage of someone whose been
suffering, together with all those innocent & anonymous victims of
Iraq, & who has experienced the cynicism of our society & govt. The
photos have been treated from Houri's special sensitivity & poetry,
from her perspective as mother, refugee & politically aware person."
COME & SEE IT FOR YOURSELF.

3) FAIRFORD : INDEPENDENCE DAY : FRI 4th JULY
Related Sites:  http://www.fairfordpeacewatch.com  http://www.gwi.org.uk
DATE: Fri 4th July. TIME: 3.00-6:00pm (approx)

 http://www.fairfordpeacewatch.com/Map%20and%20Directions.html
INDEPENDENCE DAY & GATECRASHERS STROLL. There will be a procession
from the village to the main gate of USAF Fairford, where our
own 'Declaration Of Independence' will be handed in. All partygoers &
gatecrashers are required to bring what they need for a good time:
fancy dress, soundsystems, street theatre, musical instruments,
samba bands, party poppers, Mad Hatters, ladders etc.
The majority of aerial bombing missions on Iraq we're carried out
from USAF Fairford (Gloucestershire), reducing the UK to the status
of unsinkable aircraft carrier in the eyes of US foreign policy.
Fairford has become the hub of the US military machine. It's
therefore vital that we expose & oppose the militarisation of
Fairford before the next US/UK war of aggression is decided upon.
LEGAL DISCLAIMER: Partygoers are reminded this is a peaceful demo &
that the land on and around the base must be respected at all times.
DIRECTIONS TO FAIRFORD: Fairford is 6 miles east of Cirencester, 10
miles north of Swindon &  20 miles west of Oxford. Fairford is on the
A417 going east to west. Or along the A361 going north to south,
turning onto the A417 at Lechlade village. The A417 runs straight
through Fairford Village. USAF Fairford is 20 minutes walk from
Fairford, along Horcott Rd.
PARKING: Is easiest in Mill Lane/Park Street. There's a free car park
at the top of Fairford village High Street just north of the church.

Demonstrations at Menwith Hill Spy Base (North Yorkshire) & The
Houses Of Parliament (London).

DATE: Fri 4th July. TIME: 12:00noon Onwards
PLACE: Menwith Hill Rd. North Yorkshire. Off the A59 & along B6451.

MAP OF THE BASE BELOW:

SPEAKERS INCLUDE: Political Satirist & Comedian Mark Thomas.
"In March 1999 the UK & US govts announced that NSA Menwith Hill was
to become the European Ground Relay Station for the Space Base Infra
Red System (SBIRS) - playing a crucial role in the American Missile
Defense system 'Star Wars'. NSA Menwith Hill is unaccountable,
secretive & out of the control of the UK govt. The presence of this
base means all our security is at risk particularly because of the
role the base played, & is still playing, since the invasion of Iraq."

"Members of Britons for Peace (Bedford's antiwar group) will be
assembling outside the Houses of Parliament to demand our
independence from America. We feel this day cannot pass without a
body of people present at the seat of British Govt to demonstrate our
horror that America's greedy policies have been imposed upon us by
the very people who were elected to represent our interests. London,
at present, is full of tourists. We can't miss this opportunity to
let the world know how we feel. We can't possibly do nothing and let
our voice be seen to be silenced. Many other antiwar groups and
campaigning organisations have been informed of our plans. Please,
please join us! We hope to see you there."

5) FILM : 'JENIN JENIN' : SUN 6th JULY
Related Site:  http://www.bristolpsc.freeserve.co.uk/
DATE: Sun 6th July. TIME: 1:30-3:00pm.
VENUE: 'The Porter'. George St. Bath. (On the Junction Of Bathwick
Hill & Sydney Buildings.) DIRECTIONS BELOW:
 http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?X=376000&Y=165000&scale=10000
"In Apr 2002 the world was shocked at apparent war crimes taking
place in a refugee camp near Jenin in occupied West Bank, with
journalists & foreign witnesses denied access. After the atrocity
Israel refused a UN investigation. The Palestinian producer, Mohammed
Bakri, made this 54-minute documentary. He says it is about 'human
suffering as such - about a wounded soul, a demolished home, a felled
tree, a picked flower, a broken heart'. It is not even-handed but
this is for good reason; the Palestinians' story has not been allowed
to be officially recorded. This film shows suffering from a
Palestinian viewpoint, & how prolonged oppression & terror has
affected the hearts & minds of inhabitants of West Bank.
Bakri says he's telling the world where terror springs from, &
describes the fertile ground & infrastructure that has been created
where terror blossoms.  It is a factual situation, a refugee camp
inhabited by people who were expelled from their homes in 1948, who
tried to live & get on with their lives & who have now experienced
this second nakba, or tragedy. Amongst others, a girl of 12 tells her
story without fear, & how her experience nourished hatred & the wish
for revenge. This sad fact confronts the viewer; what will happen to
us all if in parts of the world children on a daily basis are
confronted with war & violence from an early age?"

6) RALLY : NO MONEY FOR COLOMBIAN WAR : THUR 10th JULY
Related Site:  http://www.colombiasolidarity.org.uk
DATE: Thur 10th July. TIME: 6.00-8.00pm
PLACE: Whitehall. Opposite Downing Sreet. LONDON
*NOTE: There will also be a PICKET from 2.00pm on 10th July, as well
as a VIGIL on Wed 9th July from 4.00-7.00pm. DIRECTIONS BELOW
 http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?X=530000&Y=180000&scale=10000
"Tony Blair is convening a meeting, on 10th July, of EU states, the
US, the World Bank & IMF. It's purpose is to raise support for the
govt of Alvaro Uribe Velez, which presides over the worst human
rights abuses in the western hemisphere. We call for no aid go to
Uribe's repressive regime & instead urge direct international
solidarity with the Colombian people. Why does Uribe need more aid?
The Colombian authorities count on the support of the US through Plan
Colombia to pursue their policy of war against the people. Colombia
is already the 2nd biggest recipient of US military aid, & is home to
thousands of US troops & private military personnel. It has just been
revealed that the Pentagon spent $150 million in 2002 on private
contract operations involving 300 US mercenaries in Colombia.
Under the pretext of fighting terrorism Uribe is seeking assistance,
while at the same time formalising relations with paramilitary
groups, offering them pardons for drug trafficking & crimes against
humanity. More aid to Uribe will worsen the human rights situation.
There are 3 million displaced people, forced from their land by
paramilitary violence, & twice this number have fled the country.
There are 8,000 politically motivated assassinations every year. The
UN estimates that the state, & their paramilitary allies, are
responsible for more than 80% of them. The vast majority of the
victims are unarmed civilians. Last year 184 trade unionists were
assassinated. Human rights defenders, women's organisations, black &
indigenous groups are also singled out by paramilitary violence."

chance to flaunt their power, & an opportunity for arms companies to
advertise their wares. This year the B52 bombers that were used for
the mssive bombing of Iraq will be returning to Fairford, this time
to 'entertain' the British people, along with the notorious B2
Stealth Bomber. People must understand that these weapons of mass
destruction are responsible for the death & maiming of 10's of
thousands of people around the world, & importantly that this mass
slaughter has not stopped & will never stop until we say no. Bristol-

10) NEWS : IGNORING THE WORLDS BLOODIEST WAR
Full Story:  http://www.counterpunch.org/fagen06182003.html
"When the press pays any attention to the Congo - or African wars in
general - they characterize conflicts as 'ethnic' or 'tribal' wars,
rooted in age old hatreds. This explanation is not only false, but
racist. It provides cover for the argument that 'we' - invariably
some mix of Western nations - must intervene to stop this irrational
ethnic murder. This argument is a repackaged version of the same
racist excuses given for European powers conquest & colonization of
Africa in the late 19th century. Any prospect of resolving the Congo
war requires a much different framework - one that doesn't look to
the architects of the crisis to solve it.
As with many civil conflicts in Africa, ethnicity provides a
mobilizing lever for politicians, just as it did in the Balkans wars
in Europe in the 1990s. But the Congo war is about far more than
ethnicity or regional politics. It's the legacy of brutal Belgian
colonial rule, the Cold War & US/European Imperialism, all aimed at
controlling the Congo's massive mineral wealth. In the European carve-
up of Africa, the Congo was given to Belgium. Belgian rule in the
Congo was barbaric even by the brutal standards of European
colonialism. In their quest for rubber & ivory, the Belgians murdered
as many as 15 million Congolese in the first 30 years of their rule.
When the Congo threw off the colonial regime in 1960, the Belgians
hadn't developed the infrastructure beyond the minimum needed to
exploit its natural wealth. Moreover, Belgian based capital
maintained vast holdings in the country, & the Belgian govt conspired
to mould post-independence Congo to suit its desires. Congo's elected
prime minister, Patrice Lumumba, was murdered by Belgian agents
months after taking office, with the active support of the CIA. He
was assassinated because he advocated independence from the US in
foreign policy, & opposed the domination of the country by Western
political & economic interests.
After Lumumbas death the CIA installed dictator Mobutu Sese Seko, who
ruled Congo for 32 years. Mobutu, who renamed the country Zaire, was
faithful to his masters in Washington, who rewarded him for being a
Cold War ally against Moscow. The Cold War in Africa, however, was
never cold. The US & USSR fought proxy wars up & down the continent.
When Washington backed colonial & white minority governments, Mobutu
gave US policy an African face. It didn't hurt Mobutus prospects that
the Congo has immense amounts of gold, cobalt, uranium & other
valuable or strategic minerals that the US coveted.
With the collapse of the USSR in 1991, & the end of the Cold War, the
nominally 'socialist' govts in Africa turned to the free
market 'neoliberalism' pushed by Washington through the IMF, & other
institutions. Washington had no more reason to support Mobutu's
corrupt regime & cut him loose. Mobutu's brutal dictatorship was
overthrown in 1997 by a rebel movement led by Laurent Kabila & backed
by Rwanda. Yet the country was soon plunged into what some have
called 'Africas 1st World War' as armies & militias from Zimbabwe,
Angola, Zambia, Namibia, Rwanda, Uganda & the Kabila govt fought over
the vast territory & rich mineral deposits in Congo.
Laurent Kabila was assassinated in 2001, but the fighting has
continued under the govt led by his son, Joseph. This war is the
background for the current bloodletting in Ituri. But when Washington
& Paris make pious pronouncements about ending the bloodshed in the
Congo, remember their role in Africa's other recent civil wars. The
US military made its first direct intervention in Africa in 1992 amid
Somalia's civil war as part of a UN peacekeeping mission.
Washington's stated aim was ending a famine, but US forces killed an
estimated 10,000 until resistance forced the US to withdraw in 1993.
During the genocide in Rwanda the following year, Clinton didn't lift
a finger to stop 1 million murders carried out by the Hutu government
against the minority Tutsis. For its part, France - by far the
dominant European power in the region - had backed the Hutu govt, &
saw its influence decline as a result. Washington seized the
opportunity to increase its presence at France's expense. So the war
for control of the Congo isn't mindless tribal killing. It's a war
of the new world order - one in which traditional allies in Europe &
the US back competing sides in a slaughter for key economic resources
& strategic influence." CHRIS FAGEN. 18/06/03. Counterpunch.

but people in power can live with that. What they can't live with is
sustained pressure that keeps building, organisations that keep doing
things, people that keep learning from the last time and doing it
better next time." Noam Chomsky
