2) RECLAIM THE BASES SUMMER CAMP : 22nd - 25th AUGUST
Organisers Link:  http://www.reclaimthebases.org.uk
The 'The D10 Group' is organising a 'Reclaim The Bases Summer Camp', which will
take place at Aldermaston (Berkshire) from 22-25 August. Aldermaston & its sister site
at Burghfield, 6 miles away, are at the centre of Britain's nuclear weapons industry.
Ever since the 1950s, as Britain developed the Polaris system, Aldermaston has been
the 'factory' where Britain's nuclear weapons have been researched, developed,
produced, & eventually decommissioned.
WHAT WILL HAPPEN AT THE RECLAIM THE BASES SUMMER CAMP?
"The D10 group has produced a 'wish list' which we are working to make happen. We
envision skill sharing workshops on cutting/climbing fences, lock-ons & other forms of
blockading, on bicycle actions & wool actions. We also want to exchange knowledge
on military bases across the country (Fairford, Lakenheath, St Athans, Fylingdales,
Menwith Hill, Devonport, Coulport, Faslane, Northwood etc) & what role these bases play in the UK/US/NATO military structure?
During the war we experienced a shortage of people who know about legal issues, so
there will be workshops on how to organise legal support. The war also brought lots of
new people to activism who started off being against this one war. We want to look a
bit deeper & ask the questions: What is anti-militarism & non-violence? What is our
analysis of militarism? What other ideas do we have about non-violent strategies? We're sure there will be a lot more ideas for workshops, but that also depends on you to make them happen!"

HOW TO GET THERE? The camp will be at Bluebell Wood, Aldermaston.

"Stop The War Coalition launched a People's Assembly earlier this year as a way of
injecting some real democracy into the debate about the so-called 'War On Terrorism'.
Around 1,000 people attended the 1st assembly, which was held a stone's throw from
the heart of Parliament, & which called for the restoration of democracy in the UK, &
the restoration of international law.
The 2nd Assembly will consist of delegates from every community, & aims to keep the
pressure on the govt by indicting it for lies, which in themselves constitute a negation of democracy & debate. It will include presentations by legal & weapons-inspection
experts which will help expose the ministerial deceit, & provide a voice for ordinary
people to speak out."

6) PUBLIC MEETING : THE OTHER SEPTEMBER 11th : THUR 11th SEPT
The US has organised coups and invasions against other countries for
many years. Chile on 11th September 1973, & Iraq in 2003 are only 2
examples. Britain is often involved. Why do they do it? & how can we
build a more effective opposition?
DATE: Thursday 11th September. TIME: 7:30-9:15pm. FREE ENTRY
VENUE: St Mary On The Quay Church Hall. Colston Avenue. City Centre.
(Opposite The War Memorial). MAP BELOW:
 http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?X=359000&Y=173000&scale=1000
BRISTOL-STOP-THE-WAR PUBLIC MEETING. Speakers To Be Confirmed.
"February 15th saw Britain's largest ever anti-war demonstration, echoed in cities
across the world. Despite this unparalleled opposition, Bush & Blair pushed ahead with
their invasion. Lies used to justify the attack are now being exposed. The death toll in
Iraq mounts. Whatever their view of Saddam Hussein, Iraqi people resent the occupation of their country. Schools & hospitals, electricity & water supplies barely function. There are daily attacks on the occupying forces. US companies are handed lucrative contracts to rebuild facilities destroyed by bombing. The Iraqi oil industry is to be privatised, benefiting major oil companies not the Iraqi people. The US army is planning to stay in Iraq for years while trying to establish a government that will rule in the USA's interests."

7) TALK : 'KIRKUK TO HORFIELD' : TUE 16th SEPTEMBER
Sami Velioglu, has recently returned home after driving an ambulance full of medical
supplies from Bristol to Iraq. Come & hear Sami describe his experiences & hear first-
hand what is happening in Iraq.

VENUE: Friends Meeting House. 300 Gloucester Road. MAP BELOW:
 http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?X=359500&Y=176000&scale=10000
Sami Velioglu lives in the UK & has family in Kirkuk. He sold many of his possessions
& brought a 2nd hand ambulance. With the help of local activists funds were raised to
fill the ambulance with medical supplies & drive it overland to Iraq, donating both the
supplies & ambulance on arrival. Sami travelled 3000 miles to the Turkish/Iraqi Border,
with two other companions in a Land Rover, but only Sami was allowed in as British
Nationals we're being turned away. Sami's dual nationality enabled him to get through. He then joined up with the Turkish Red Crescent for the final part of his journey. Dr Mary Page, who took unpaid leave to travel to Kirkuk, but who was turned away at the border said, 'The hospitals have no equipment, no medical supplies. They were very short before the war because of the sanctions, but since then, with all the looting, equipment has gone & no drugs are available. We are desperate to help the people there.'"
WE ARE STILL COLLECTING FOR MEDICAL SUPPLIES.

"This war was wrong before it started & it remains wrong. It is illegal, immoral &
unnecessary. The reasons for war were given as the existence of weapons of mass
destruction (WMD). Not a single WMD has been found, even though many of the sites
identified as containing them have been visited. Even if any are now found the conduct
of the war makes it clear the Iraqi regime did not intend to use them. The US & UK showed their war aims early on by taking over the 600 oil wells. The reconstruction of Iraq will be carried out mainly by US companies. There is much talk of the oil becoming the property of the Iraqi people but all the signs are that revenues from the oil will be used to feed the profits of the primarily US construction companies."

9) TRIDENT PLOUGHSHARES PEACE CAMP : 2nd - 6th OCTOBER
Organisers Link:  http://www.tridentploughshares.org/index.php
DATE : 2nd-6th Oct. PLACE : Plymouth. Devenport Dockyard.
The 2nd Trident Ploughshares Camp in Plymouth is from Thurs 2nd - Mon 6th Oct
2003. The camp will primarily consist of educational workshops & NVDA training (non-
violent direct action). There will also be a mass blockade beginning on Monday morning. Further details are to be confirmed. Come to the camp for direct action, & to play a major historical role in ridding the world of nuclear weapons.
FURTHER INFO: Claire 0845 4588363 or Sandra  sandranarcho@yahoo.co.uk
For Maps Visit:  http://www.tridentploughshares.org/devonport/maps.php
"Trident Ploughshares is a part of the international nuclear disarmament movement.
Trident Ploughshares activists have pledged to disarm the UK Trident nuclear weapons
system in a non-violent, open, peaceful, safe & fully accountable manner. The UK's
Trident nuclear weapons system is based on 4 submarines which carry between 12 &
16 missiles, each of which can deliver a number of 100 kiloton warheads to individual targets - mass destruction on an unimaginable level. One of the Trident nuclear submarines, HMS Vanguard, is currently being refitted at Devonport Dockyard which not only poses a threat to world peace, & is illegal under international law, but also poses a major threat to the health & safety of the 270,000 plus citizens of Plymouth along with a fleet of Hunter nuclear submarines."

10) NEWS : US ADMITS IT USED NAPALM BOMBS IN IRAQ
 http://news.independent.co.uk/world/americas/story.jsp?story=432201
"American pilots dropped the controversial incendiary agent napalm on Iraqi troops
during the advance on Baghdad. The attacks caused massive fireballs that obliterated
Iraqi positions. The Pentagon denied using napalm at the time, but Marine pilots & their
commanders have confirmed they used an upgraded version of the weapon against dug-
in positions. They said napalm, which has a distinctive smell, was used because of its
psychological effect on an enemy.
A 1980 UN convention banned the use against civilian targets of napalm, a mixture of
jet fuel & polystyrene that sticks to skin as it burns. The US, which did not sign the
treaty, is one of the few countries that makes use of the weapon. It was employed
notoriously against both civilian & military targets in the Vietnam war. The upgraded
weapon, which uses kerosene rather than petrol, was used in March & April, when dozens of napalm bombs were dropped near bridges over the Saddam Canal & the Tigris river, south of Baghdad.
'We napalmed both those approaches,' said Colonel James Alles, commander of
Marine Air Group 11. 'The generals love napalm. It has a big psychological effect.' A
reporter from the Sydney Morning Herald who witnessed another napalm attack on 21
March close to the Kuwaiti border, wrote the following day: 'Safwan Hill went up in a
huge fireball & the observation post was obliterated.' At the time, the
Pentagon insisted the report was untrue. 'We completed destruction of our last batch of
napalm on 4 April, 2001,' it said.
The revelation that napalm was used, while the Pentagon denied it, has outraged
opponents of the war. 'Most of the world understands napalm & incendiaries are a
horrible, horrible weapon," said Robert Musil, director of the organisation, Physicians
For Social Responsibility. Mr Musil said denial of its use 'fits a pattern of deception'.
The Pentagon said it had not tried to deceive. It drew a distinction between napalm
invented in 1942, & weapons dropped in Iraq, which it calls Mark 77 firebombs. They weigh 510lbs & consist of 44lbs of polystyrene-like gel & 63 gallons of jet fuel.
A spokesman admitted they were 'remarkably similar' to napalm but said they caused
less environmental damage. John Pike, director of the military studies group GlobalSecurity.Org, said: 'You can call it something other than napalm, but it is still
napalm. It has been reformulated in the sense that they now use a different petroleum
distillate, but that is it. The US is the only country that has used napalm for a long
time. I am not aware of any other country that uses it.' Marines returning from Iraq
chose to call the firebombs napalm." Andrew Buncombe. The Independent. 10th August 2003

11) LEGAL : BRISTOL WITNESSES WANTED
a) MARCH 20th: "A man was attacked by a police dog at the anti-war demo on College
Green on Thur 20th March. The incident happened at about 8.30pm. The man, Shaun
Davies, is in his mid-20s. He had a shaved head, & was wearing green khaki trousers &
a padded 'puffa' jacket with a hood. The police dog sprang at Shaun, & ripped quite a
lot of stuffing out of the back of the jacket. Shaun was arrested, & charged with -
among other things - attacking a police horse. He says the rider of the horse charged the horse at him, & that he was merely trying to get out of the way. If anyone witnessed this incident, Shaun would be grateful if they would come forward to help prevent him becoming the victim of more injustice."

Or you can contact him via:  nabataat@yahoo.co.uk
b) MARCH 29th: "On the anti-war demo of Sat 29th March, Ornella Saibene was arrested & charged with a Section 5 Public Order offence. This offence is itself minor (relating to use of language others may find distressing), but Ornella has been found 'guilty' & now has a criminal record. She continues to claim her innocence. She believes the police have mistaken her for someone earlier in the demo, & that any 'distressing' language she may have later used was a result of being assaulted by police while walking down Park St. We need witnesses to confirm she was not swearing at police prior to the demo reaching Park St, & witnesses to her assault by police while walking down Park St. Ornella is in her early 40's (but looks younger). She had black hair was worn in plaited pig tails. She was wearing a dark grey fleece, blue t-shirt, denim skirt & black tights. She is 5' 6" & medium to full build. If you think you can help, please get in touch."
