SPEAKERS: George Galloway MP, Sammi Velioglu, & Sharon Foley.
GEORGE GALLOWAY MP: "On Thursday 23rd October George Galloway was
expelled from the Labour Party over complaints about remarks critical
of the Iraq invasion he made on Abu Dhabi television. Galloway
memorably described Blair & Bush as 'wolves' for invading Iraq.
Galloway has denied that he had invited the armies of Arabic nations
to attack British troops. The allegations which originated in
articles written in the Sun 'newspaper' came from a transcript of the
interview he did on Abu Dhabi TV. Galloway claims that the transcript
came from a translation from English into Arabic & then back into
English & states that this cannot be an accurate way to determine
whether he is guilty."
SHARON FOLEY: Sharon Foley is a dedicated & critical activist within
Bristol-Stop-The-War, as well as within Bristol as a whole. Come &
hear her speak.
SAMMI VELIOGLU: "Sammi Velioglu is an Iraqi/British citizen who

Millions across the globe now see the US as the biggest threat
to world peace. How did this happen? What can we do about it?
This film explores the background to America¹s imperialist project &
charts the phenomenal growth of the anti-war movement. How much
impact did the stop the war movement have & where does it go from

(The road behind the Arnolfini parallel with the Docks.) MAP BELOW:
 http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?X=358500&Y=172500&scale=10000
MAIN SPEAKER: Chris Harman. Editor Of Socialist Worker.
"How do we move forward to build a better world? How can we turn
protest for global justice & against imperialism & war into a new
society of social justice & peace? A year ago we used to compare the
left wing movement against the war with that against the Vietnam War
in 1968. Since then the movement has grown to ten or even 20 times
larger than that movement. It represents the entry into political
activity of a whole new generation of young people, & with that the
reactivation of many of the older generation. But there is another
essential task to be undertaken. That is to fill the vacuum on the
left when it comes to politics over other issues. We have to show
there is a focus to the left to millions of people who are sick to
death of the government's record & the erosion of their own lives.
If we do not, the gutter press will continue to try to deflect that
bitterness onto asylum seekers & other minorities." Chris Harman.

7) 2nd CAIRO CONFERENCE : 13th - 14th DECEMBER

DATE: 13-14th Dec. PLACE: Cairo (Capital Of Egypt).
IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO GO EMAIL:  cairosupport@stopwar.org.uk
Limited accommodation with activists in Cairo is available, but you
may need to arrange accommodation in one of Cairo's many reasonable
hotels. You will need to be in Cairo Fri 12th Sept for the start of
conference on the Saturday morning.
FLIGHTS: Some people have expressed a wish to stay after the
conference has finished, we have therefore decided to ask people to
book their own flights, but if you contact the email above help &
advice is available.
CAIRO DECLARATION:  http://www.stopwar.org.uk/article.asp?id=301202
"Resistance to the US occupation of Iraq & to the Israeli occupation
of Palestine is growing & the calling of the 2nd Cairo conference is
an opportunity to strengthen our ties with the anti-war movement in
the Arab world. The 1st Cairo conference, held in Dec 2002, issued
the Cairo declaration against US aggression & globalisation &
established the International Campaign Against US Aggression. In the
following months many anti-war initiatives were undertaken in Egypt,
Lebanon other Arab countries. These culminated in the 20 March
demonstration in central Cairo, the largest demonstration since the
1970s.
The 2nd Cairo conference has now been called for Saturday 13 & Sunday
14 December 2003. The preparatory committee in Cairo are now hard at
work arranging the conference. We are now calling on all peace
groups, trades unions, religious organisations, political campaigns &
organisations to send representatives to the Cairo conference. Now is
the time to draw together the forces of resistance in the Arab world
& from around the globe. The Cairo conference will be a sign of the
strength of that continuing resistance & of solidarity with those in
the Middle East resisting globalisation & imperialism."

8) TALK: '.....THE STRUGGLE FOR PALESTINIAN FREEDOM' : 16th DEC
FULL TITLE: 'Edward Said & The Struggle For Palestinian Freedom'.
DATE: Sun 16th Dec. TIME: 7.30-9:00pm. TAX: £2.50 On The Door
VENUE: Anson Rooms. Queens Rd. 1st Floor University of Bristol
Students Union. Clifton. Bristol. MAP BELOW:
 http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?X=357500&Y=173500&scale=10000
Come & debate the present & future challenges thrown up by Israel's
US-sponsored aggression against Palestinian people. What is the
legacy of Edward Said for our understanding of this conflict? What
strategies of protest & resistance should we adopt? How does the
conflict link in to the wider system of US imperialism in the Middle
East & elsewhere?
SPEAKERS INCLUDE: Hala Abuateya (Palestinian activist) ~ Alex
Callinicos (Professor of Politics, York University) ~ Ghada Karmi
(Author of the book, In Search of Fatima) ~ Steven Rose (Biologist, &
regular participant on Radio 4's Moral Maze programme).
THE EDWARD SAID ARCHIVE:  http://www.edwardsaid.org/
BACKGROUND: "The world continues to mourn the loss of Edward Said,
who passed away on 25th September 2003, after a 12-year battle with
leukeamia. Edward Said was a professor of English & Comparative
Literature at Columbia University, but his realm extended from music,
to literature to philosophy to media & political activism. His books,
speeches & writings broke new ground in enlightening the masses in
these fields, & bridging the gaps & misunderstandings between the
West & East, or 'Orient' as he aptly called it.
As a Palestinian in exile, he was the most eloquent spokesperson on
the Palestinian cause, for a period spanning 3 decades. Shattering
the myths & distortions propagated by the media became commonplace
for the professor. His rebellion against injustice, & compassion with
the everyday man, despite his own privileged upbringing, acquired him
his critics. Yet he was one never to falter, as he stated, 'I have
been moved to defend the refugees' plight precisely because I did not
suffer and therefore feel obligated to relieve the sufferings of my
people.'"

9) REPORT : THESSALONIKI PRISONERS HUNGER STRIKE
NOTE: Events are moving quickly, so please do check the links below:
Links:  http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/2003/09/278180.html
 http://www.wombles.org.uk/actions/infoarrest.php
BACKGROUND: "The European Union summit (held in Thessaloniki, Greece,
between 20-22 June this year) discussed new measures to control their
populations in the name of 'security' while building ever-higher
defences for 'Fortress Europe' to keep out the victims of their
capitalist wars & policies. Workers, migrants & the common people,
anti-capitalists & anti-authoritarians came together from across
Europe to resist this capitalist clampdown.
During demonstrations on 21st June over 100 people were detained,
some of them forced to sign blank papers by the police. 7 of the
people arrested are facing felony charges, & up to 25 years in jail.
They have been refused bail & are still in prison in Greece. This
injustice is well documented in the case of Simon Chapman. Simon,
from the UK, was beaten in prison & denied medical care, despite
suffering serious head injuries & broken ribs. Only at the insistence
of the British consular was a doctor permitted to attend him.
Simon, & the other prisoners, are being charged with possession of
explosives, resisting authority & rioting. However, there is evidence
that Simon was framed. Video footage documents police planting bags
of molotov cocktails on him while he was being beaten. They include
Simon Chapman (English), Fernando Perez Gorraiz (Spanish), Carlos
Martin Martinez (Spanish), Souleiman 'Castro' Dakduk (Syrian), Spyros
Tsitsas (Greek) and two Greek juveniles.
Five of the 'Saloniki 7' have now been on hunger-strike for over a
month in protest against the circumstances of their arrests &
imprisonment. One of them (Spiros Tsitsas) has been without food
since 7th Oct, three (Simon Chapman, Fernardo & Carlos) without food
since 5th Oct, whilst Suleiman 'Castro' Dakduk has already been on a
hunger strike for over 40 days.
PLEASE VISIT THE LINKS ABOVE FOR UP-TO-DATE INFORMATION.
To receive regular updates email:  thessalonikiprisoners@yahoo.co.uk
WRITE A LETTER OF SUPPORT TO SIMON CHAPMAN & THE OTHER PRISONERS.
POST: Kratoumeno Simon Chapman (Or Prisoners Name). Dikastikes
Fylakes Diavaton. T.K. 540 12 Thessaloniki. Greece.
NB: Letters which DO NOT have a return address on the ENVELOPE will
not be delivered to prisoners (However, it does not have to be your
own address). This new procedure applies to all prisoners.

10) REVIEW : 'CHILD VICTIMS OF WAR' PROJECT
Organisers Link:  http://www.childvictims of war.org
Depleted Uranium Link:  http://www.pandoraproject.org/
Email: info@childvictims of war.org or Tel: (0117) 9025363
BACKGROUND: 'Child Victims Of War' is a voluntary organisation
concerned with the environmental & health effects of modern warfare &
the impact on current & future generations of children. We are
particularly concerned with the use of uranium in weapons systems,
the targeting of life support systems, & the dangers of unexploded
ordinance.
Since the use of Agent Orange in the Vietnam war, every war conducted
by the US & it's allies has resulted in a poisoned & lethal
environment which continues to kill well after the hostilities have
ceased. Many of the sick, deformed or dying children in South East
Asia, the Balkans, Afghanistan & the Arabian Peninsular were not yet
born when these wars took place.
THE PROJECT AIMS ARE TO: i) Provide Medical help for children who are
victims of war. ii) Equip  children's hospitals & clinics. iii)
Provide training & educational resources. iv) Help local communities
campaign at an international level for a clean-up of their
environment, & adequate healthcare. v) Fund scientific research into
the long-tern environmental & health effects of war. vi) Take legal
measures on behalf of children whose human rights have been breached.
HOW YOU CAN HELP: "'Child Victims Of War' believe that we, as
ordinary citizens, can play a leading role in safeguarding the future
for all our children. By supporting communities, families & children
in target countries, we can raise aware of the environmental dangers
of warfare & improve, or save the lives of individual children. We
can also build bridges of peace & solidarity between our countries.
Your ideas & actions are vital. Please contact us if you or your
organization would like to be involved in the project."
OTHER WAYS TO HELP: A small but regular donation a month could help
provide a child with regular medication, equip a clinic, or go
towards vitally needed scientific research. The possible uses are
endless.
HOW YOU CAN DONATE: Donations can be by cheque or by standing order.
BY CHEQUE: Made payable to 'Child Victims Of War'.
POST TO: 17 Anstey St. Easton. Bristol. BS5 6DG. UK.
BY STANDING ORDER: Please get in touch for more information.
Email: info@childvictims of war.org or Tel: (0117) 9025363

"If you go to one demonstration and then go home, that's something,
but people in power can live with that. What they can't live with is
sustained pressure that keeps building, organisations that keep doing
things, people that keep learning from the last time and doing it
better next time." Noam Chomsky
