19 campaigners visit sainsbury bristol this morning (26/2/05)

at 3am on the 26/2/05 19 intrepid anti gm and farm campaigners blockaded sainsbury,s bristol depot. arriving at 12.30 there was a swift lock of six people in arm tubes who proceeded to have a 3 hour lie down and even snooze. at 3.30 am the law worked out just how they thought they could release a couple of the lockees, so it was decided to unlock in one place and try to make a run for it as a chain, during this process three support were arrested for aggravated trespass. the lockees then had themselves another sit down when they were told if they unlocked then the three aresstees would be de-arrested and there would be no arressts, partially true as the three support were de-arrested but the six lock ons were taken into custody, at the time of writing (2pm) they were still being held in 2 bristol nicks

Nice one

Brilliant work guys. Hope you´re all OK and that you didn´t get too cold. Keep indymedia posted as to your situation. Have Sainsbury´s issued a statement? (it would be nice to know how much it cost them). If any of the blockaders get fined let indymedia know too so we can do something in the way of fundraising.

Well done to all who braved the cold and took part in this action. Hope those arrested get out soon. Solidarity.

GM free

26.02.2005 15:54

For those seeking a store which offers a guarantee of GM free food and even a guarantee of GM free grass from which the cows eat that produces milk and cheese there is one - Marks and Spencers.

Happy Shopper

marcs&sparcs??

dont go suggesting to people that they should be buying of marks and spencer if they wanted gmfree foods. now isnt that a bit screwed in order to avoid gm products to be supporting the zionist cause which is backed by M&S. wouldnt it be much better if folks went to their local health food shop and get their organic fruit an veg from there instead of some faceless multinational??
cheers for listening

Choice

I suppose it depends on what you think is more important GM food or Israel !!!

GM or Israel? What about the Co-op?

27.02.2005 00:51

If you don't wan't to support Zionism at M&S, and you don't want to support GM crops, I have to agree with the poster above. You should visit your local health food shop.

Failing that, Co-op stores also sell non-GM tainted milk.

Fantastic news

27.02.2005 13:02

This is fantastic work. Sainsbury's are now on the edge of a change in policy. Let's push them over the edge. Everyone has a Sainsbury's local nearby, and some superglue somewhere, right? EF!

Make the Most

27.02.2005 19:37

Well the 6 were charged, and are appearing in court this Wednesday 2nd March 9.25 am at Northavon Magistrates Court, Yate. If Sainsbury's want to carry on with the charges, then we'll make the most of this opportunity to put the spotlight on their practices. Your continued support, participation, campaigning and media-savvyness will be much appreciated! Thanks.

Full bloody support... and as my colleague above stated, far be it from us to suggest that there might be a Sainsbury's near you in desperate need of a visit. I highly do not recommend superglue and spray paint, bricks and milk as a means of demonstrating solidairyity.

re: nice one

you asked how much it cost sainsbury's?
In a court case, they said it cost them £100.000-150,000 per hour per depot blockaded.
If you want to do a fundraiser, it'd be much appreciated I'm sure - there may or may not be fines, but there's also always the (high) cost of organising such actions, for kit and transport, a large burden on the individuals involved.

negotiating with cops can work

04.03.2005 12:19

Just a point of clarification- After the chain had been moved off, overwhelmed by cops and dumped on the pavement it became clear that the cops had nicked some of our support team. Those locked together then pointed out to the police that they could stand around for another hour or so while what appeared to be an unmarked and solitary TSG worked out how to unlock us from each other one by one (so we could fit in the van), or they could de-arrest our mates and we'd release ourselves from each other and make their lives easier. They agreed. Sometimes it's worth trying to do deals with the dears.

The next court date, which will just be a pre trial review is on the 29th April (i think) We're hopeing that we'll be able to use it as a way to take apart Sainsburys possition on GM and get detailed coverage of the issues. Love rahh and solidarity to the fine folk of the North who did their depot the other day.

X
