Urgent Action

Attack on trade unionist in Barrancabermeja, Colombia.

Mr. Juan Carlos Galvis had participated in a meeting of the petroleum trade union USO (Unión Sindical Obrera) and was on the way to the office of the CUT.
Near the office of the CUT, in the quarter el Recreo, 2 armed persons attacked Mr. Galvis car, with gunfire.
The car was shot at repeatedly, but wasn't met by the bullets.

Juan Carlos remained unharmed.

Juan Carlos Galvis works in Coca Cola and is active member of the food trade union SINALTRAINAL (Sindicato Nacional de Trabajadores de la Industria de Alimentos). SINALTRAINAL persues a court process against Coca Cola in the USA because of human right violations in Colombia.

Some days ago, the district attorney of the section 61, Dr. Juan Carlos Losada Persomo announced, that the lawsuits against the members of the food trade union Sinaltrainal Luis Javier Correa Suarez, Jorge Humberto Leal, Juan Carlos Galvis, Luis Eduardo cooked cia, Alvaro Gonzalez, Jose Domingo Florez and Edgar Alberto Paez Melo have been granted.

The lawsuits were filed by Panamco Colombia S. A. and Santander S. A. (both subcompanies of Coca Cola in Colombia processing bottling ). With this lawsuits, the businesses react on the lawsuits filed against Sinaltrainal on the 20 July 2001 against Coca Cola, which was submitted at the court south Florida, USA, because of the existing impunity in Colombia .

Because of the severity of the accusations, we therefore ask national and international organizations to send protest letter including the following demands:

1. To stop all type of threats as well as murder, letting people disappear, assassination attempts and lawsuits against trade unions in Colombia.
2. The identification and persecution of the people being responsible physically and intelectually for the assassination attempt on the trade union activist Juan Carlos Galvis.
3. Of Coca Cola that it suspends all hostilities against workers organized in trade unions like Sinaltrainal and accepts its responsibility for the committed human right violations.

Bogota, 22 August 2003
