Al Qaeda, "yes we did it"

Investigative reporter | 22.09.2005 17:11 | Anti-militarism | Ecology | Social Struggles | World

As the super storm Rita rolls towards Texas this week, Al Qaeda has claimed responsibilty...

While the Bush regime reluctantly started to mobilise some kind of relief efforts to the poor people abandoned in New Orleans, a letter posted on a Web site frequently used by al-Qaida claimed responsible for the massive torm that devastated the city.

The audio message thought to be from the notorious Abu Musab al-Zarqawi came on the fourth anniversary of al Qaeda's terrorist attacks in the United States on September 11, 2001. An known Al Qaeda's leader in Iraq said that Hurricane Katrina was an answer to the prayers of Iraqis and Afghans who have suffered under U.S. occupation.

The voice on the recording was verified to be al-Zarqawi by an CNN Arabic speaker familiar with many of his previous statements. In the recording, al-Zarqawi said, "The devastating hurricane that hit the United States occurred because people in Iraq or Afghanistan -- maybe a mother who had lost her son or a son whose parents were killed or a woman who was raped -- were praying for God and God accepted their prayers."

Now with hurricane Rita tearing down on the Bush stronghold, Texax, Al-Jazeera television on Wednesday night broadcast a video tape it said had been sent by al-Qaeda showing Mohammad Sidique Khan, one of the suicide bombers in the July 7 London attacks, reading out his last testimony and blaming the US involvement in Iraq for the approaching mega storm. The video tape, the second appearing to emanate from the al-Qaeda movement since Hurricane Katrina, is the clearest evidence yet linking the storms with the terrorists.

"Rejoice, community of Muslims, our act of meteorological terror unleashed upon the infidels" the badly synced recording states. "The heroic storm of our making has conducted a blessed attack on the crusader. We demand that all countries pull their troops out of Afghanistan and Iraq".

The authenticity of the video could not be immediately confirmed. But in recent months, authentic claims of responsibility from different terrorist groups, including the Iraqi al-Qaida affiliate, have been posted to the "al-Qala'a" Web site where the posting was found.

CIA Chief Porter Goss issued this statement. "We are concerned about this claim. However, there exists no credible evidence to link Al Qaeda and hurricane Katrina. But as a precaution, 500 meteorologists in the New Orleans area have been detained for questioning under Section 3,987, Subsection 5,678, Sub-subsection 3, Weathermen As Enemy Combatants, of the Patriot Act." An unnamed source in the FBI said that it was a well known fact that Al-Zarqawi's group, Al Qaeda in Iraq, has been behind many of worse storms this season.

The Al-Jazeera tape shows al-Zarqawi sitting on the ground dressed in a yellow, "Gordons of Gloucester-type" rain coat. Beside him is a large "golf-type" umbrella and behind him is a "weather graphic" of a tornado. Confussingly, Al-Zarqawi claimed that "while we have unleashed the hurricane terror of Louisiana, we are not responsible for the destruction of Mississippi. That was Providence, and it shows Providence is on our side. Praise rain. Praise wind."

Porter Goss also addressed this point in his statement. "It is this selective weather terror that causes us to doubt the link. However, the "weather graphic" may have a link to US based Al Qaeda meteorologists, which is the reason for their detainment."

However, observers say that Al Qaeda can not shirk responsibility for the flooding of New Orleans which has long known it was highly vulnerable to flooding and a direct hit from a hurricane. Over the last 10 years at least $250 million worth of crucial levee and flood protection projects around New Orleans have been abandoned due to spending pressures on the war on terror and homeland security were made a priority to combat Al Qaeda.

The liberial US political left, including some known communist sympathisers, have questioned whether the Al Qaeda huriccanes could be a retaliation for the USA Tsunami attack earlier in the year.

The world's top scientists and accademic experts in the field has been debating whether it is possible that Al Qaeda could have developed weapons of mass destruction capable of forming huriccanes. Some say it is nonsense and simply a confirmation that climate change is real. Others have said that there was no hurricane really and that the whole thing has been a creation of the liberal media to draw attention from how well the american economy is doing at the moment.

Meanwhile, some elements of the Christian right have been claiming the attack as the work of their lord and not Islamic terrorist at all. They say that it was an attack on home grown gays and 'Southern Decadence'. Repent America director Michael Marcavage said, "Although the loss of lives is deeply saddening, this act of God destroyed a wicked city." He continued, "From 'Girls Gone Wild' to 'Southern Decadence,' New Orleans was a city that had its doors wide open to the public celebration of sin. From the devastation may a city full of righteousness emerge".  http://www.repentamerica.com/pr_hurricanekatrina.html

Nether-the-less, in a show of compassion perhaps, the Christian right has also been mobilising the full force of the lord against the oncoming storms. The crack pray squad led by Pat Robertson has been focused using the power of prayer to steer hurricanes away from rich neighboorhoods and financial districts. In 2003, Robertson called on God to prevent Hurricane Isabel from hitting Virginia Beach. In 1995 he took credit for steering the course of Hurricane Felix, and in 1985 he claims to have controlled Hurricane Gloria, which ironically caused millions of dollars of destruction in many states along the U.S. east coast.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pat_Robertson#Claims_about_the_power_of_his_prayers
