Rumsfeld not welcome in Adelaide

Takver | 18.11.2005 11:06 | Anti-militarism | Anti-racism | Repression | World

Anti-war activists protested in Adelaide against United States Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, calling him a war criminal and demanding that he go home. With Adelaide in a security lockdown for the visit of Donald Rumsfeld and US Assistant Secretary of State, Robert Zoellick, for the annual Australian and US ministerial consultations (AUSMIN), the protest was allowed to go ahead on the steps of Parliament House.

AUSTRALIA: ADELAIDE: The protest also called for the release of David Hicks from Guantanamo Bay jail.

Australian Democrats SA leader Sandra Kanck told the rally the protest had originally been planned in opposition to the Howard Government "Terror" laws. "We would not need terror laws if our Prime Minister had not tied us to the coat tails of (US President) George W Bush and Donald Rumsfeld," she said. "I have been delighted to hear much sedition here today and I have been delighted to see placards that are saying seditious things. But by Christmas this may not be allowed in our democracy."

Kris Hanna, South Australian Greens MP told the rally that Mr Rumsfeld was a symbol of that power and money which runs the United States and Australia.

"They are willing to kill, they are willing to murder innocent civilians by the tens of thousands to exploit the resources of other countries and sacrifice even their own soldiers for these goals of war and expropriation."

The group then marched from Parliament House down King William Street to Victoria Square, stopping peak hour traffic. It was reported that one person was removed and then later arrested by police for disorderly behaviour, after a clash with a sole pro-US demonstrator.

Rumsfeld in Adelaide

US Secretary of Defence, Zionist and neo-con extraordinaire, Donald Rumsfeld, will visit Adelaide (of all places) to hold discussions with servile Australian politicians regarding Australia’s continuing involvement with the pariah nation of the world, the USA. Rumsfeld’s visit is timely, it coincides with nationwide dissent and protest against IR and draconian anti-terrorist laws recently implemented by leading US lackey and coward extraordinaire, John Howard.

FAIR TREATMENT FOR HICKS AND HABIB

David Hicks' father flew to Cuba to see his son for the first time in 4 years. The US Military Commission to 'hear' Hicks' case is a kangaroo court: no choice barristers, no US domestic laws, no appeal other than to the military - and even then President Bush can overide and finding.

Government must ensure justice for Hicks

"One year was a problem, two years a grave concern. But over three years being held in these conditions is appalling and should set alarm bells ringing for all Australians who value their basic human rights."
