The Rossport Solidarity Camp was set up to support the people of Erris in their struggle against a consortium led by Shell. They plan to build an extremely dangerous onshore pipeline stretching 9km inland, to a refinery site at Ballinaboy.
The pipeline will be carrying unprocessed, odourless gas within 70km of several homes in Rossport. The refinery will be pumping waste (nickel,magnesium,arsenic) into Broadhaven Bay, which is an important breeding and rearing area for whales and dolphins. Two hundred thousand kg of pure gas will be released into the atmosphere each year. This combined with the temperature of emissions, will result in formaldehyde and rain down on local villages and protected areas close to the refinery.
The Irish state has facilitated shells every need in this endeavour,
at a great loss to the people of the country.
Since June of 2005, all construction work on the pipeline and refinery
site has been stopped due to local pickets supported by the camp. Nationwide boycotts of Shell and Statoil (another company in this consortium that stands to make a killing), rallies, public meetings and info-stalls in many towns and cities, including Galway and Dublin, have made the shelltosea campaign a formidable force of opposition.
Due to the rough weather conditions on the west coast of Mayo, we
decamped in early October, moved into a house and are preparing to set up camp again in March.
This spring we expect a major push from Shell and the state to get
this project through. We are going to need as many people this year as possible on the camp, if we hope to pose a serious threat to this
project.
