As five Palestinian hunger strikers in the city of Jenin enter their
second week of hunger strike to protest what they call the 'Israeli
policy of starvation' imposed on Palestinians since January, the Palestinian
president has extended the offer of a peace dialogue to Israel. Jenka
Soderberg reports:

An open-ended hunger strike begun last week by prominent Palestinian
peace activists and scholars has drawn little international attention,
but hunger strikers say they are 'in it for the long haul'. Ghassan
Andoni has been called the 'Palestinian Gandhi':

Meanwhile, nine Palestinians have been killed in the last weeks by
Israeli air strikes and gunfire, and 2-300 artillery rounds a day are being
fired by Israeli forces at Palestinian neighborhoods in the Gaza Strip.

Despite this, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has called for an
international peace conference, and the once-militant Hamas party has
indicated willingness to consider the 2002 Arab peace initiative.
