Israeli Plot to Create Buffer Zone in South Lebanon in Collusion with UN

transmitter | 11.02.2007 18:33 | Lebanon War 2006 | Anti-militarism | World

Hizbollah's Hasan Fadlallah MP unveiled an Israeli plot to create a "buffer zone" in south Lebanon in collusion with the United Nations and "the head of the unconstitutional government" Fouad Saniora. In a press conference, the member of the Loyalty to the Resistance Parliamentary Bloc said Israel was "seeking to create the buffer zone after it failed in its July war against Lebanon."

The Hezbollah MP showed maps and pictures showing the extent of Israel's incursion, in collusion with the UNIFIL, into more than a southern village like Rmeish, Yaroun and Aytaroun in Bint Jbeil. He also revealed that a letter was sent from Lebanon's prime minister, Fouad Saniora, to the United Nations, requesting a new and unilateral delineation of the border, knowing that the most recent delineation was made only four years ago.

Mr Fadlallah demanded these unilateral measures be "immediately stopped" and called on authorities to "eliminate transgressions and return properties to their owners."

Explanation of the dispute "where is the border"

12.02.2007 14:58

The border between Israel and Lebanon is the de facto armistice border. As is usual with such things, wiggles back and forth according to positions held.

As the years passed, the Israelis erected fences. They did so in such a way as to not affect lines of fire or building on unsuitable ground -- for example, obviously you don't try to erect a fence running down the middle of a stream but build it some meters back from the stream bank.

The Hezbollah argument (well on this issue, perhaps the argument of all Lebanese) is that the location of the fence is the border. They are saying that in all cases where the Israelis backed off some meters from the armistice line that represented a voluntary surrender of the land in between there and where they erected the fence.

The Israelis say nonsense, that where they put up fences on suitable ground does not change the location of the border.

THIS is why we see almost continuous disputes over on whose side of the border some action took place. NOBODY IS LYING. They are honestly in disagreement as to where the border is. It shouldn't matter whose interpretation of the correct location of the border you pick to understand that this isn't a case where there is a clear meaning of "truth".
