Children imprisoned appeal to Abbas

The Israeli army arrested hundreds of under-age detainees since the beginning of the Al Aqsa Intifada which erupted late September 2000.

Palestinian under-age detainees imprisoned in Telmond Israeli prison voiced an appeal to the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to intervene and place their case as a top priority especially since they are living under harsh conditions and subjected to ongoing violations.

The Palestinian Prisoners Society reported that Bothaina Douqmaq, one of the lawyers of the society, visited a number of child detainees in Telmond and that the detainees informed her that he are facing abuse and attacks by the soldiers.

One of the detainees, Bassam Shahroor, said that child detainees are not provided with the needed and sufficient food, adding that the prison canteen is overpriced.

He voiced an appeal to the Ministry of Detainees at the Palestinian Authorities to act in order to save the detainees who are already being humiliated and barred from their visitation rights.

Shahroor also appealed the Red Cross and several human rights groups to intervene and stop the Israeli violations to the international law and the basic principles of human rights.

The Israeli army arrested hundreds of under-age detainees since the beginning of the Al Aqsa Intifada which erupted late September 2000.

They, along with the vast majority of the detainees, were tortured during interrogation and were confined to solitary for extended periods as a sort of psychological pressure.

In April 2007 the number of imprisoned Palestinians increased to 11,229.The 11,229 Palestinian prisoners now in Israeli jails include 104 women, 375 children of both sexes, and 19 mothers whose children are imprisoned with them.

Approximately 3,800 Palestinians are being held in civil prisons. The remaining prisoners are held in Israeli military detention centers and prison camps.
