Midsummer House = Midsummer McDonalds

Demo report, Midsummer House, 20th October.....

Following a protest on the 12th October, activists were again at Midsummer House in Cambridge, asking the business to stop selling Foie Gras.

Foie Gras is a so-called delicacy, the production of which commonly involves the force-feeding of birds by shoving tubes down the animals’ throats. The animals’ liver then swells painfully. In the UK force-feeding birds is not legal, but the government claims EU/international rules mean they cannot ban its sale. The process can cause suffocation and injuries to the birds’ throats. Many birds die in this process even before being sent for slaughter.

On this occasion campaigners were greeted by two police officers in a 4X4, which gave passers by something to look at, adding to the demonstration! PC 732 Siddique stood filming protesters, as well as informing the campaigners of his intention to use section 14 to effectively end the protest if the campaigners failed to comply with his directions.

The campaigners chanted and gave out leaflets and received positive comments from passers by.

Midsummer House might want to see themselves as civilised, supporting a product that is deemed so inhumane that it’s illegal to produce it in this country. But it simply means that Midsummer House is on a level no higher than fast-food outlets such as McDonalds.

Fast food joints aren’t known for their excellent food hygiene and it turns out neither is Midsummer House! Based on inspections carried out by an environmental health officer the ‘Score On The Door’ run for the city council ranks Midsummer House only one star! Jimmy’s Night Shelter got a higher score then the Midsummer House!

It seems appropriate then for activists to dub the Midsummer House, Midsummer McDonalds and, as one of the campaigns said, the name will stick!

To get active for animals in Cambridge check out the website of Animal Rights Cambridge at  http://animalrightscambridge.bravehost.com and come to one of the meetings on the fourth Monday of every month @ The Bath House, just off Mill Road. (£1 hall hire per person)
