Talking About Freedom of Expression At Sunscreen Film Festival

Chad Andro | 20.04.2010 20:59 | Education | World

Human Right Number 19, "Freedom of Expression" is the subject for Youth for
Human Rights Florida President Dustin McGahee and Alexa Vega, star of the
blockbuster movie, "Spy Kids".

Saint Petersburg, FL – Independent films, documentaries, actors, producers, screenwriters, composers, were all part of entertainment and education for the independent film artist during the 5th Annual Sunscreen Film Festival in Saint Petersburg, Florida, this weekend. But one sponsor of the festival, Youth for Human Rights Florida, carried a message that is the same no matter what job you may have in making a film – Freedom of Expression.

Youth for Human Rights Florida educates about the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, as written by the United Nations in 1948. “I am proud to be a part of the Sunscreen Film Festival,” said Youth for Human Rights Florida President Dustin McGahee. “Independent films are made possible by Human Right #19, Freedom of Expression, a right we all need to fight for.” Dustin McGahee became involved in educating others of their human rights as he is inspired to action by the words of humanitarian L. Ron Hubbard, “Human rights must be made a fact, not an idealistic dream.”

The Sunscreen Film Festival 2010 is hosted by the St. Petersburg Clearwater Film Society, a Florida not for profit corporation. The festival started at Baywalk this past Wednesday with a red carpet walk of supporting celebrities - Billy Dee Williams who played LandoCalrissian in Star Wars; his entourage of Darth Vader, R2D2, and Storm Troopers; Ethan Suplee, My Name is Earl; Alexa Vega from Spy Kids; Bill Cobbs, Night at the Museum, to name a few.

The festival was filled with opportunities to get a personal insight into not only the actors, but also the behind the camera notables such as Producer Ralph Winter, X-Men, Wolverine; Producer Sean Covel, Napoleon Dynamite; Producer/Writer Dean Batali, That 70’s Show, Buffy the Vampire Slayer; and more. John Travolta, a Florida resident and supporter of Florida film making, made a special guest appearance at the Awards Ceremony on Saturday night.

The primary goal of the film festival is to encourage the creation, production, and exhibition of independent films in Florida through its educational programs and public screenings, thereby increasing awareness and support of local filmmaking as a cultural and economic asset.
