Borderline Politics: Arizona's ugly new immigration law is deeply un-American
This weekend will bring co-ordinated rallies in at least 70 cities across the United States, as people of all colours and creeds protest against Arizona's new law on illegal immigration. President Obama has rightly condemned Arizona for the "un-American" legislation. The Mayor of San Francisco has banned city employees from visiting; Los Angeles is considering a boycott. Michael Bloomberg, the Mayor of New York, has described the law as "national suicide". Mexico has issued a travel warning. Condemnation has crossed party lines: Marco Rubio, the Speaker of the Florida legislature and a rising star of the Republican Tea Party movement, has also slammed the new law. The chorus of disapproval is as diverse as the new law is excluding.

Election time: asylum seekers lose their last safety net
When terrified men, women and children are being shunted off to countries where they face real and imminent risk of rape, torture, genital mutilation or death, an MP's urgent appeal to government may tip the balance, stalling removal directions, making time to get legal advice.

But not during a general election campaign, when MPs lose their right to represent constituents' grievances. "We will not be able to respond to former MPs, or prospective parliamentary candidates on individual cases," says the UK Border Agency, "unless there is a signed letter of authority from the individual they are representing."

Trapped waiting
Jerome Phelps Director of London Detainee Support Group exposes the secret indefinite detention of migrants
It appears on the map as 'Government Buildings'. When you find it, tucked away behind some residential housing, it does not bring to mind military installations on occupied corners of tropical islands. The razor wire and bars on the windows are your only clue that this is Colnbrook Immigration Removal Centre, the seemingly permanent location of Britain's indefinite detainees.
Unable to be deported, yet endlessly refused release, the detainees here watch planes take off and land at Heathrow airport through the thin strips of their cell windows, and they wait. As weeks turn into months and months turn into years, they wait.
