San Gimignano- Certaldo . Tuscany Italy
Local people are incredulous that their Town council should approve such a project which totally goes against the policies being implemented by the rest of Europe where Governments and local authorities are making strenuous efforts to reduce the amount of CO2 by, for example, burying it under the ground.

PRESS RELEASE FROM :

THE COMMITTEE FOR THE DEFENCE OF THE ENVIRONMENT OF THE VALDELSA

On the 26th of September 2012 The Tuscany Regional government will convene a conference (Conferenza dei Servizi) at "Palazzo Aldobrandeschi" Grosseto among the issues up for discussion are the highly controversial plans for CO2 extraction at the locality of San Paolo, Certaldo.

It appears very likely that the project will get the green light although the applicant, a local building company, Lifenergy SRL, has no experience what so ever in this highly specialized field. The Certaldo town council has already given the thumbs up to the project.
The site, in a very picturesque part of the province of Florence noted for it's celebrated historical past is very close to the River Elsa(200m), situated on the he medieval road known as  Via Francigena, also borders the towns of San Gimignano, the famous medieval towers over look the site, and Barberino Val d'Elsa. Both of the Mayors of these towns have publicly come out against the project.

Local people are incredulous that their Town council should approve such a project which totally goes against the policies being implemented by the rest of Europe where Governments and local authorities are making strenuous efforts to reduce the amount of CO2 by, for example, burying it under the ground.
There is indeed a project in the province of Grosseto which is doing exactly that buries
CO2 under the ground, yet less than 100 km to the north they plan to extract it.

The inhabitants of the area close to San Paolo are also very angry at the way the plans have been pushed through in secrecy totally ignoring European regulations on "Participation" and informing the public,  the plans only came to light by chance in June of this year people have had very little time to organize serious opposition.   On the eve of the meeting of the regional government  most of the population remains totally unaware of the existence of this highly controversial project.
They also find it incredible that a small local building company, Lifenergy S.R.L,  with absolutely no expertise in underground exploitation of gas and minerals should be given permission to Drill for CO2. Ten years ago the multi national company SOL highly specialized in this business sector requested permission for to implement the exact same project on or very close to the site, but were denied.
