Plastic Bullets for MayDay

AlFresco | 30.04.2001 08:08

The BBC are reporting that police will be given plastic bullets on MayDay.

The BBC are reporting that police will be given plastic bullets on MayDay, but don't worry 'officers will only resort to the use of rubber bullets...if the situation gets out of hand'.

Well that's alright then!

Police violence

30.04.2001 08:21

No surprise here then! Having been present last year when the police charged a peaceable crowd in Whitehall and then reading subsequent "News" reports I will not be surprised if they take this opportunity to test their hardware in the capital and worry about justification afterwards. This year we're having an event in the town centre Lampeter.

Quebec use of rubber bullets

30.04.2001 10:23

Rubber bullets were used in protests against the FTAA a few weeks back. Rather than aiming at "violent" protestors, many peaceful pacifists found their groin's were common targets. As with the use of tear-gas, which affected everybody not just a hard core. What if "innocent shopper" get hurt? Since, from what Livingstone stated on Sunday, that they are assuming that all who attend will be violent, this seems mightly irresponsible.

Small Armed Hardcore

30.04.2001 10:45

A small hardcore of those attending tomorrows May Day protests are planning on taking dangerous weapons, the BBC is reporting today.

Police marksmen armed with live rounds will be strategically positioned to assasinate protestors carrying dangerous modelling balloon swords, squeaky inflatable hammers, and dressed in white overalls.

Black clad, armoured individuals, it is reported will be collecting "harmless" rubber bullets from a central organising committee. An anonymous correspondent suggested that there is some risk of "someone putting an eye out, and probably not their own".

The organisers of the response to tommorows action have reported that these weapons will not be used unless things "turn nasty". Earlier today, the organisers of the response announced that they expected things to "turn nasty".

Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone has urged those not interested in violence to stay away from London. It is expected that 6,000 police officers will ignore this advice.

The centre of London is anticipating complete shutdown due to widespread rumour mongering by those who should know better.

A bypasser commented "This is bull-shit. In this country we have the right to collect and discuss ideas without fear of attack from the state. Or so I thought. I am going to go to Oxford Street tomorrow to see what happens for myself. It is already clear that the media and police spokespeople have no idea what is going on, and will not be able to give the public an unbiased account of what happens tomorrow."

May Day May Day.....

30.04.2001 14:12

This is unprecedented in Britain and unjustified. May Day last year began as a carnival and ended in mayhem provoked by police 'crowd control' tactics. The British Government is at war with it's citizens.

Media bias: just a small violent minority

01.05.2001 00:16

Why does Indymedia have to be so biassed?
Can't it see that it's just a small armed minority
of dangerous policemen who are getting out of hand?
Most policemen who come to these protests to police the
event are entirely peaceful and it's just a small unruly minority who give the rest of them a bad name.
