Cardiff Bothered - 10 Hour Benefit Gig

Nas | 30.05.2002 15:11

Afther the success of Afghan Plight Night, another benefit gig has been organised.

What is the Clothing Project?
The project is set up by the Red Cross which provides service to help many vulnerable people through crisis points in their lives. Many asylum seekers come to this country in simply the clothes that they stand up in, and have few resources to help them.
The clothing project is housed within the Reception Centre and provides asylum seekers with immediate access to items of clothing in an environment that promotes well being and dignity for them.

Funding
Funding for a year was made available within the British Red Cross for a project working with asylum seekers and refugees. Cardiff City Council was at the time preparing for it's response to the dispersal, and it was decided to set up a partnership which would ensure that asylum seekers arriving in Cardiff could access clothing as a matter of emergency.
A bid was put forward, and funding was granted, however this funding is fast running out and the sum of £6,500 is required Urgently to keep this project going.
The clothing project provides more than just clothes to the arrivals, links have been made with other organisations such as Cardiff Asylum Seeker's Network, Displaced People in Action, Splott Family Centre, Africa Centre, RSVP.

Between June to December 2001, some 261 asylum seekers have benefitted from emergency clothing provided by the project.

International Tracing and Message
The British Red Cross International Tracing and Message Service reunites families separated by war, political upheaval or disaster. Dispersal of asylum seekers to Cardiff has led to an increase in requests for this service, and volunteers with the project have been trained to deal with these requests.

Cardiff Bothered feel that the Clothing Project provides an invaluable service to those arriving at the reception centres, and have agreed to help raise funds to keep the project going.

How are we going to do this one?

Well boys and girls, if you were at Afghan Plight Night, and I am led to beleive that a lot of you were, you will remember that it was a great success (unless you were too trashed to remember!), and all the performers were top!! If you were not there... well shame on you, it was for a good cause!! We are holding another performance packed event.
Where, When and What's it called this time??
This time, we are hitting the Railway Club on Sanquaha Street, Splott. Another 'Party With A Purpose', on June 1st 2002. The event is called "Who's coat is that Jacket?"
