Latest from Strasbourg, Wednesday 24

IMC-UK Travelling Circus | 24.07.2002 17:50

After two days of peaceful and festive demonstrations, actions, street theatre and performances in Strasbourg, today police have attacked a demonstration agains a migrant`s dtention centre in Strasbourg city centre.

Confirmed reports of heavy clashes with police are arriving at the NoBorder Camp radio stream.

Around 700 demontrators that were taking part in a demo against a detention centre have been attacked by riot police that used tear gas, CS spray, heavy batton charges and snatch arrests.

Confirmed reports of about 10 people having been arrested and many others injured.
At the present time most of the people taking part in the demo are trying to get back to the camp but they are consistently attacked by riot police. Another smaller group is currently trapped in central Strasbourg and have been tear gassed several times. People in the camp are currently gathering and moving towards Strasbourg city centre to help and show solidarity to those still trapped in the city.

The athmosphere in the camps is increasingly getting more and more tense as people fears police eventually attacking the camp.

As we write people are arriving with tales of police brutality and calls are continuasly been made in the camp for people to help them with water and first aid.

More later...

The demonstration went by train to Strasbourg and after a while it started. Stops at serveral buildings like the courthouse, at airlines which are deporting people and a policestation. The demonstration was really peacefull the whole time. The sambaband joined and after an hour the atmosphere was starting to get more powerfull. Suddenly about four policemen started to attack the demo with teargas without any reason, we think it was on place de la republice. After the first attack there was much confusion and we tried to get away all together. The police was the whole time persecure us and shooting teargas. Even in the center of the city, right on the marketplace they still shoot with teargas. The demonstration was split up in different groups and people were walking through a small strett under teargasattacks from the roofs. Civil cops targeted some people directly and the demonstration was split into smaller groups again. Because of the situation people started to panic a bit and everything was quite confusing.
In front of the cathedral suddenly there have been big amounts of riotcops. People were shouting slogans like: we are peacefull, what are you! Or: stop violence! After a while of discussions with the main officer the demo was allowed to walk back to the camp. They didn´t let it go back to the station, so the center had to be left again, all walking in cains with the police behind. It was not possible to help people that got arrested because the demo had been under permanent teargasattack. The cops also used their beatingsticks a lot, especially on people getting arrested. Near the university they splitted the demonstration again but it was managed to close the demo, or what was left, again after some minutes. Then there was another attack from the police and one person had to be brought to the hospital. But finally the demonstration was walking back to the camp as a big block in cains and were welcomed by the people which stayed in the camp or somehow made it to the camp faster.
It was said that between 30 and 50 people have been arrested and some are missing. After all there wasn´t any reason for the attacks from the police. The demo was supposed to be powerfull but peacefull and perhaps they had the plan to keep the acitvists out of the center to not disturb the tourist shopping around and spending lots of money. There has been no violent or militant action out of the demonstration.
The police also robbed a videotape and the memorycard from a digital camera from the documentary team of the noborderZONE.
One of the thing to do for the next days is to get the people arrested free and try to have a calm final action on Saturday.
